I have 97 psd that makes a loud "wobble" noise that sounds like it is coming from the turbo. I have a boost gauge and the boost is fine, but when i am producing no boost and just cruising at one speed it makes the loud noise. If i give it gas and produce boost or let out of the gas it goes away. I think it is coming from the turbo, but can't tell for sure. It is pretty loud and real annoying. Any ideas what could be causing the noise?
My money is on the EBPV on the turbo. There is a plug under the drivers side of the turbo, unplug it and see if it goes away. If so its fine to leave it unplugged, it is just to help the truck warm up faster but many people dont use it and cant tell the difference in warm up time.
If it is a hissing sound along with some slight hesitation, it is probably your Exhaust Back Pressure Valve(EBPV) cycling on and off. If you recently opened upyour exhaust you'll notice it alot more than with stock exhaust. Some guys around here disconnect or remove it all together. Hope that is the info you're after.
It seems to do it all the time weather cold or warm. My exhaust is a 3in downpipe to 4in with no cat. Also it is cali emmisions if that matters. I have had the big exhaust for a while and never noticed it until recently. I will unplug the wire and check that out. Thanks for the replys!!!

Im not gonna say that it for sure isn't the EBPV but I would highly doubt thats what it is. Whats you've described to me sounds like you've got a bearing going out in the drivetrain somewhere would be my guess. When your starting to loose bearings you can accelerate through the bad spots which would lead you to believe that its something entirely diffrent and that the problem goes away at diffrent speeds or rpms but when you let out of it the noise still comes back. Bearings are funky! Is your truck 4wheel drive? If so do you still have the auto hubs up front?
I'm gonna go with Steve on this one. Usually, the EBPV "sound" is associated with a hissing noise, not a "wobble" as stated.
You might want to disconnect the turbo inlet hose to check the wheel. If it wiggles, you got problems.
The turbo guru's can tell you what you'll need to do to correct this. I've been lucky and have had no troubles with my turbo. All I know about the turbo is, if you can wiggle the wheel, that ain't good.
It is colder than frozen reindeer crap here right now, but I will pull it up in the garage and check it out tonight, I will let you know so long as I don't freeze to death.
sorry, I hadn't read all the posts before I posted. I don't think it is a bearing because it only does it when I am running at one constant rpm AND making no boost. Lets say I'm running 70 down the highway with 10lbs boost, no noise, but in town running 35 constant with my foot resting on the gas and no boost... waaa, waaaa , waaa. Then if I let off the gas all together or accelerate, it goes away. I do have 4wd, but manual lock hubs, just replaced most of the front end about a year ago, ball joints are a pita by the way.
Well whatever it maybe, i can say that what your describing is not your turbinator. You see your turbo is a thrust bearing center section which means there is no ball bearing setup and when it goes out it just goes. Chances of your stock unit going out without a fueling upgrade are slim to none because Garrett has those stock chargers setup for factory drive pressures from your exhaust up pipes very well. Many users have found turbo failure to be a result of un-equal drive pressures which is generally caused by an increase in fuel supply to the cylinders. So with that being said if it was your turbo you'd know it at all speeds and you wouldn't be building normal boost pressures, etc., etc.,. Also, your turbo is under constant motion meaning when you start your truck or even crank it over to start it, your charger is seeing movemnt in the compressor and turbine wheels so if your problem was your turbo it would be noticebale at all rpms, mph, boost #'s, etc.,. A wooble noise or a grinding is usually 9 times outta 10 drivetrain. That 1 outta 10 time is usually engine internals or tranny internals gone bad, lol a sound I know to well. Irregardless, best of luck with what you find!
x2. I knew somebody was missing in the latest events.
Haha, nother hijacked thread it seems, lol. How's everybody been? I've been away for sometime from FTE but Im back!!!! I've been hangin with the boys over at PSN
Farm, how's the truck doin? Neal usually keeps me posted like a kid on Christmas with his new mods and how the trucks been runnin, lol. He's got the bug! I just turned 5k on the new DIperformance.com motor and Im lovin it. Got a guy whose gonna take me to the local track and see what this new setup will do down the 1/4mile. She should scoot! Got those injectors and turbinator workin real nice Plus the new IC is a wonderful addition. Anyway, well see what happens
The truck needs washed and and new winshield wiper blades. Haha. The turbo install went very well and looks great. Pretty good for just a sodbuster with a couple of wrenches lol. You definitely know there is a big turbo under that hood. I re-fabbed my intercooler pipes as well.
I need some tunage and big oil and I will be complete.
What wheel setup did you go with on the puffer? I wanna see some pics of it installed. I bet you did a great job Im sure. Farmers are always better then the rest as my uncle used to say lol
