5.0L question

I just bought a 1986 Bronco XLT with a 5.0L, it has about 165000 miles on it.

I was wondering if I had a 5.0L from a 87-91 mustang would this be a direct bolt up to the AOD trans.

Also would any other components need to be changed.

This is my second big Bronco, my first I sold 3 years ago and regreted it as soon as it left the driveway. I remember the 5.0L that was in it was pretty good but a 5.0L from a mustang may move the Bronco a little better.

What are your thoughts.

Yes the HO will bolt right in, all 5.0 blocks are the same externally, but it's alot of work and expense when all you really need to do is change the cam in the existing motor.. assuming it's in good shape overall.

Why put the higher revving Mustang engine in the truck that needs the low end torque to get it moving? Of course it will fit... the question is "Why?" The Bronco outweighs the Mustangs of the same era by nearly 1500 lbs. At almost 3/4 ton weight difference AND the drag of the 4x4, I'd be looking at how to make what's already in the truck breathe better and put more out on the bottom-to-mid range. Just my $0.02.

Yes that's a good point. Despite the common assumption that the mustang 5.0 is a lot more powerful than the truck motor, it's really the weight difference that is responsible for the majority of the aparent power difference. The HO is a bit stronger and you can get at least that much more from the truck motor with a simple cam swap, but the problem is there isn't much you can do to get significantly more low rpm grunt, 5 liters just isn't enough displacement for a heavy truck.

The better solution... if you're pulling the motor anyway.. is to swap in a 5.8. I have had both these motors in my F150 and can verify the 5.8 is a much better truck motor, especially with a HO style cam and exhaust.

Thanks for the input guys.

I will be getting the Bronco this weekend, bought site unseen other than the photo's, so all I had to go by was the previous owners description. I hope all is well with the motor, he said it was rebuilt around 100000 mile mark and that he has 10 years worth of reciepts for the work done to the truck.

So I guess I will find out soon.
