4.6L, 46k miles. I went out to start the car last night and it cranked and cranked and cranked but never fired. Tried on and off for 4-5 minutes including pressing the accelerator while cranking and finally gave up. No service light(s) or any other indications of trouble. Never even seemed like it wanted to fire off...no sputtering or anything.
Went out this morning and it started right away. My wife had this happen once before about 2 months ago at the store. When she went to leave, it wouldn't start up. The car was recently driven then, but last night, it had probably been a day or two since it had been started. Coincidentally or not, she had the automotive guy at the walmart put his jumper/charger equipment on it and it started right away so I tried jumping it last night just to see what would happen and still nothing. Thoughts?? Ideas?? Hate to just wait around for it to happen again and still not know what is going on.
There's literally a dozen different things that can cause such a problem. The difficulty is when it starts okay there is no way to diagnose it, since everything is working okay. Your two choices are to live with it until it fails completely, at which time it can be diagnosed. The other thing you can do is change things like the crankshaft sensor, cam sensors,, ASD and fuel pump relays, etc. and hope you got lucky enough to replace the offending part.
Do you have any metal tags or extra keys on your key ring? Some times they will block the signal from the chip in your key and then the PCM won't let the engine start if it thinks the key is not the correct one.
im having the same issues on my g/f 97 expedition just cranks sometimes then leave it sit overight and then starts... Then sometimes it will start then die right away.. Its got a remote starter on it also sometimes it will start with remote starter then sometimes it will only start with turning key .. Im at a stand still also im sure its prolly same thing as lonewolfs symptoms any other input would be will appreciated thanks
I finally figured it out. Of course I was 100 miles out of town when it happened again, but the fuel pump was bad. 6 hours and $700 later and I was back running. Of course it couldn't happen in town at home and had to wait until we were on a day trip, but that is my luck and should be expected. Thanks for the input.
I'd still be wary. I had the same issue with my '99 XLT. Replaced a fuel filter. The thing started, ran, stopped, started, ran, stopped, started, ran--I ran four errands and started/stopped it in the driveway three or four more times just to make sure the thing was fixed. Ran up to the store to fill 'er up with 25 g's of beautiful mid-grade. Filled it up, and bam--right back where I started! Had it towed to the house, had to siphon off all that gas, yank the gas tank, replace the pump, and viola--it started! Ran all day Sunday. Monday on the way to work, I stop for coffee, and bam! It does it again!!!
It turned out to be the security chip in the key as our friend mentioned earlier. Fortunately, I'd done all the work myself so I was only out about $180 and a Saturday. The new keys cost me $50 ea, but with the new keys, it worked for over a year and a half (until a yahoo in a Camaro with no DL, no headlights, and no ins totaled the damn thing around Halloween).
