Today, the heat in my 2002 Excursion(7.3) stopped working. It may be a coincidence, but last night and today are by far the coldest days of the year with a -25 windchill. It will blow air out with plenty of force, but its ice cold. The thermostat is opening, since the hoses are hot after driving it. The guage is also reading that the truck is warming up. Where should i start?
Since your truck is hot/warm and the blower is working, I would check the heater hose at the firewall to make sure coolant is getting to the heater core. That line could contain frozen antifreeze.
You could also check/feel the temperature guage for the heater on the dash (does it feel loose) it could have broken free of it's retaining clip ( I had an old Ford, yours might be less mechanical) and is "stuck" on cool/not adjusting the temp.
Possibly last would be a clogged heater core. Doubtful in a 2002.
After that, I'm stuck. The experts on here will have to help you.
Thanks for the reply. It started working this morning, so I will probably never know what it was. I think it was the heater hose being frozen and driving it around melted it enough to blow it out though. Only thing that would of made sense.
Have you checked the concentration of the antifreeze to be sure you have adequate freeze protection? It does sound like the lines to the core were frozen and the heat from the engine eventually melted the ice.
Please not that windchill is irrelevant, the actual temperature is what is important in this case.
