Wrong oil to use?

I have an ’06 30 foot RV on a E450 super duty chassis V10. Ford calls for using WSS- M2C930A SPEC. OIL which is 5W20. I recently purchased 25 quarts of Mobil1 at a substantial cash discount at a going out of business sale, still sealed. Its spec. are WSS-M M20 929A AND IS 5W-30 Truck & SUV. I’m in the north east and have no intention of running the unit in less than 50 degree temperature. My thinking that the 5-30 should work out fine unless I’m missing something obvious to the more experienced. The engine has 10.5K on it and I‘m needing to give it it’s second oil change and would like to use the 5-30 if no bad things result. My normal cruise RPM are around 2200 with occasional up to 3000 climbing hills, but hardly more than a minute. Would I be causing grief using the 5W30? TIA<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

You should be fine running 5w-30. The engine in your E-450 is the older style 2V which was originally speced to run on 5w-30 up until 00' or 01'.

Ford changed the oil in the mustangs as well that year but nothing in the engine changed, clearances are the same. 5W20 helps with milage (not noticeable to you and I) and I've heard it helps with emissions some how. I run 5W30 in my 05. You are good.

I ran 5-20w in my truck when it was new and have switched in the last year to 5-30w and saw no differance in the performance city or highway driving.

id run whats recommended , thinner oil flows better , and also cools faster than a thicker oil , the engine is built for a certain weight oil , as an engin wears one would see a benefit of running thicker oil . thus id stick with whats recommended . although a 5w30 is to me a thin oil already

Fountain 1, I ‘m concerned only because in all my years of driving this is my first modern Ford product and I don’t know their “peculiarities” or if any “quirkiness” is present in the V10. Also in the “old” days it was common to recommend different oil weights depending on average air temperatures like 40 weight for 80 degree day average and 20 for below 30. That along with additives in each spec. may be different. The intelligent choices go far beyond: this is what we did in the 50s and my daddy always did it this way or it works for me. I’m looking for answers because of my ignorance on the subject and before I shell out big bucks for repairs because I didn’t know. Forums like this know more about these things than I do. The thing that's tricky is recognizing facts from bull. Thanks for the responses.

I doubt that you will have any issues....

That being said, though, why take the chance on it? I know you got a good deal on the 5w-30 stuff, but if the owner's manual calls for 5w-20, then perhaps it would just be best to use 5w-20. Then you can find someone who can use the 5w-30 and say Merry Christmas to them. Just my $0.02.

I agree with others here - I don't see an issue.

I concur on the "go for it" advice. When I saw northeast, I was going to say not in the winter in a low mileage engine, but if you don't run it below freezing, my concern goes away.

My research also found 0 changes internally when Ford changed oil recommendation. I suspect it may have been a marketing decision. Not many aftermarket 5W20's out there...

I may be mistaken in this case but the main reason came from the need to make MPG ever so slightly better. Still my concern was lack of additives in the 30. Guess it's not a concern and it'll be running above 50 degree air temps.

The 5-30 full synthetic Mobil-1 is IMO quite fine for the V-10. Temps here are above 40 most times. The 5 weight handles the low temp start ups. Once the engine warms up, it's well above the ambient temp so, the 20 or 30 is fine. I run the 5-30 if it the 5-20 is not on the shelf when I buy for the oil change that I am doing next.
I haven't changed over the 5.4 yet as the only service done so far was the 3k first done by the dealer. The 6.8 & the 3.0s are on a full synthetic diet.

You can use either 5W-20 or 5W-30, when Ford changed there recommendation from 30 to 20 it was for a slight increase in gas mileage, no bearing clearances were changed in the engine. I use Mobil 1 5W-30 in my 2000 V-10 E-450SD Motor Home, the 5W-20 is to hard to find at times, and it has worked fine with 5W-30.

Go with it.

And 3000 RPMs for this engine is light breathing. Don't be afraid to rev that ***** up...she loves it!
