We have about 20 F150's and F250's at the plant here (60 miles north of Detroit) and while the trucks are under warranty we use 5W20 then switch to 5W30 after the warranty expires. We have new 09's down to 03's V8 equipped but no V10's. Believe me, they are abused. You know, drive it like you stole it. The guy who is in charge of maintenance is quite **** about keeping records. According to him mileage is no different after the switch and we have not had any oil related engine problems either. Personally, I still run the 5W20, but only because I can buy it as cheap as the 5W30, other wise I'd switch.
i noticed my last oil change my mechanic put 5w-30 in my 05 excursion and it calls for 5w-20, i did see a slight drop in mileage, however, i thought it was due to the cooler weather and winter blend fuel. however, i will be switching back to factory spec oil weight during the next change.
I believe Fords change from 5W-30 to 5W20 was only for better mileage, but you dont want to go with any oil heaver than 5W-30. When I first got my used V-10 at 70K, it had 15W-40 in it, and upon start up the cam chains would take too long to get oiled to suit me, so I switched back to 5W-20 or 30, and the problem went away. I cant really tell the difference between the two, and I only use Mobil 1, but that's just me.
