Hey guys, first time poster.....I just found your web site and what a great source of info it is! I have a 1980 F100 that I bought brand new. It came with a 300 6-cly and I recently put in a 351W with a 7-5 tranny. I am in need of a dipstick and tube for a truck. This is a 70's block but not sure what it came out of. Will a 302 or 351 tube and stick work? Thanks and I appreciate your help.
Is it the one that screws into the oil pan? if so dealer or junkyard. The press in style you can get a chrome one from summit racing or jegs. Oh yeah, Welcome to FTE!
Thanks guys. Yes, I put a new truck pan with a rear sump on it. Will a 302 or 351 truck engine have the same tube and dip stick? The truck is in the shop having a new gear put in it, but I believe there is a place on the side of the block near the rear of the engine.
That's the problem. The older blocks did not have a spot in the rear for the dipstick. So the oil pan has to have provisions for it in the side of the pan.
The first swap I did on my 80 was a 86 efi 302 engine. The rear sump pan did not have a dipstick, but that was a newer block and it did have it in the rear of the block.
After that engine went, I got an older 79 351w and installed it. It did not have any spot in the rear for a dipstick, but lucky for me I found a rear sump pan for a 351w in the junkyard, and it did have the dipstick mounted in the pan. The engine was laying in a heap, so I don't know what it was out of, but the pan was light grey, so I am assuming it was out of some late model van or truck.
You can probably make it work. Since my pan/engine was in a pile, the dipstick was all bent up, so I made my own out of 3/8 fuel line.
If you want to use a 302 dipstick setup, install it, and then fill the engine up one quart shy of what is required. Run the engine and then let the oil settle down for a hour or two. Pull the dipstick, and see where the oil level is. It should be on "ADD". If it's not, then take a hacksaw and make a new line.
Then add the final quart, run the engine and let the oil settle again, pull the dipstick, and then if the oil is not on "FULL", then make another hacksaw mark for it.

Did the block have a reverse sump oil pan on it when you got it?
If so, the engine came from a 1975/79 Econoline.
Otherwise it's a car engine, as F150/350's & Bronco's didn't get 351W's till 1981.
yes, screws in the pan. I just replaced the tube on my friends 83, got it from ford and it was different length than the old one, maybe I should have gotten the dipstick new also. I'm just saying there are different length tubes and dipsticks, so be careful and check your level like Franklin suggested
I'm not sure what pan it had on it. I bought the engine built. I'm having a gear put in the now, but when I get it back I want to check the block number. I know the casting number starts with D, but that's all I know right now. If I get the entire number, can you tell what it came from? Bill, is it possible to get a disptick and tube from Ford still?

I'm not Bill but I'll tell you that I got a dipstick tube for my M-block motor from Ford just
about a year ago, the local dealer even had it in stock (which shocked the sh33t out of
me).

The pan you have now has no provision for a dipstick, is that correct?
I should get the truck back the first of next week, and I'll post the casting number.
I subscribe to every thread I post in, so when you type the info, I'll see it and let you know the part numbers and availability of the stick and tube and what else it was used on.
