The official first truck thread.

Well I figured it'd be easier if I started a new thread on this instead of piggybacking on the O/T Thread.

Well here's what I've got so far.

I've looked at a truck in Rhode Island.

It's an early 99 F350 SRW XLT 4x4 with 135k miles and a wrecked bed. It is a regular cab longbed that is in good mechanical condition. Asking price is 8700$ I'm figuring to offer the guy 7500.

I saw in a magazine for sale: 99 F350 SRW XLT 4x4. Asking price is $7,995. I haven't seen or spoken to the owner of this vehicle. I don't know the mileage and I don't know the mechanical and aesthetic condition of the truck.

The latest thing was Markadeck saying I wouldn't be happy for very long if the truck wasn't at least a longbed extended cab. I'm not entirely sure why I wouldn't want a regular cab so I asked him to elaborate.

Thoughts, comments, and suggestions VERY welcome.

The reg cab doesnt have that much room and gets full of crap fast. My old truck was a reg cab and I dont think I could ever go back to that after having a crew cab.

The truck in the mag is it an early or late 99?

Don't know. Haven't spoken to the owner yet. I'm going to call them some time this week to get the mileage and VIN so I can get an Oasis report on it.

I had an 2000 F-250 extended cab before the 01 crew cab that I have now and I don't think that I could ever have another truck that isn't a crew cab. So much more room and since i'm a tall guy, I didn't like having to scoot my seat up for someone to sit behind me. I personally just like a bigger truck. But I think that if you would like a regular cab, then by all means go for it.

I don't really need an extra row of seats since I obviously don't have kids or anything. Crew cab is definitely out of the question since I need extra bed space and want to keep the rig fairly short for trailer pulling.

Plus crew cab is more money than I have.

My budget is under 9,000$ without tax. Anything more than that is out of my price range.

I know that regular cabs have a way of filling up with crap fairly quickly, but that's what a crossbody toolbox is for. Coats fit very nicely inside the clean side of one.

Well I've been given an opportunity to possibly buy a bed from an FTE member! I figure I'm looking at something in the ballpark of 1500$ to 1750$ for the whole deal. That's body, paint, and liner.

I figure if everything checks out on the second truck it is a better deal. I'm going to guess that when I call them tomorrow they'll say the truck has like 250k miles on it which is almost double the first truck. I know these trucks run forever, but that's a lot of miles.

If a regular cab works for you, go for it. About all my back seat hauls 99% of the time is a bunch of stuff that I'm just too lazy to unload until it gets completely full. Besides a regular cab should get better fuel economy. If you need more room to haul "crap" get a good toolbox or a bed cover.

Buy the lowest mile truck you can afford. Look around, they are out there. Don't get in a hurry to buy a truck. I have 123,000 on mine and I bought it new. There are good deals out there, just need to find one.

I may or may not be able to buy my brother's old cross-body toolbox that he had in his 99 F350 longbed for cheap. If not I know the way to Tractor Supply to buy a new one.

Not having a cross-body toolbox is not an option for me. I can put a grease gun and a basic tool set plus a tow strap to rescue Dodges and Chevy in one side and keep the other side clean for jackets, etc.

I'm thinking of having a spray-in liner installed in the new bed.

Anyone have an idea of the pros and cons of one?

The lowest miles I can afford is probably going to be the truck with the wrecked bed.

Linex is what I would go with, nation wide lifetime warranty is hard to beat.

And another reason for a bigger cab is you can fit more girls into it!

That issue might come up later, but as for right now that isn't an issue.

Girls take time and money. Both of those are in short supply for me these days.

If you tow a trailer a good bit a good Supercab shortbed truck makes for a GREAT work truck. Yes the bed is a little tight when you throw a tool box in it but with the rear seats folding up that leaves you even more room for storage. I loved my last truck for being able to manuver a trailer in tight spots but now I wouldn't trade my CC SB for anything due to having a family now.

And by the way. ^That's what lifted trucks are for. Fat chicks can't jump.
