1st step I would take would be to listen for the fuel pump. maybe check the fuel pump wiring to see if power is getting to the pump (a wiring diagram will be useful). If the pump is getting power, then put a fuel pressure gauge on the fuel rail to see if there's pressure.

on the right hand side of the engine, on the side of the intake manifold where the fuel lines go upto, you will see a Schraeder valve with a little plastic cap over it. Cycle the key a few times, go out and push the pin in with a small screw driver. Gas should shoot a good foot or more up out of it. On the 2.9s, the computer gets the spark and fuel injection timing information from the module on the side of the distributor. So if you have spark, the injectors should fire as well.

Use a long handle screwdriver, touch the blade against one of the fuel injectors, and the the handle end right against your ear, and have someone crank the engine over. If you do not hear a very disctinct clicking, then you may have a bad connection in the harness to the injectors.
