wondering if anyone has used a steering box out of a newer truck on a 64 with a solid axle. i'm thinking a box from a 2000 F150 would work. i've got a 302 so the pump should not be an issue.
so let me know why it won't work.
also can any one identify the axle just cirious about that? there are good pics in my gallery under the tech album.
Doesn't have that fore-and-aft drag link going to the left steering knuckle?
I think any changes would require some pretty involved modifications to the truck.
Come to think of it, though, 80-96 trucks used a steering box mounted to the inside of the frame forward of the axle. That might be an option.
fore-and-aft drag link? is that when the drag link links the arm off the sterring arm moves forward and back to push pull the knuckle. if so that is what is there.
modifications are not a problem. i'm sure some sort of power sterring would be worth the trouble once i get the truck on the road.
are there other ways to fit power sterring on a solid axle in a 64?
Yes, that is the style I was talking about.
If the tie rod is in front of the axle, you can use a steering system similar to a straight axle 4x4 with the 80-96 box. If it's behind the axle, you can use 68-79 Ford power steering box (don't use the Bendix one, it's garbage.) You'll have to modify a tie rod and drag link for it, but it'll work with the least amount of effort.
