Wow, there is that much ATF in the Tranny on the E4OD?

OH yea, there is a coolant system too.
hmm.
I guess that all makes sence.

I have a MAZDA 5 SPEED OVERDRIVE, not an e4od. So dont rag on my "half ton"
Cause it take 6 qt's. =)

The OP asked about only draining the pan. That will take anywhere from 5 to 9 quarts. 3.5 gallons will grossly overfill the trans if the torque converter isn't also drained.

IMNSHO it is a waste to only drain the pan and not also drain the torque converter. Then you will need between 3.5 and 4 gallons.

Thats a lot of quarts to fiddle around with.
Who sells it by the gallon?
Or better yet who sells it in 5 gallon buckets?
Then we could just use one of them cheap pail pumps.

It's easier to just do it this way:

The TheDieselStop.Com 1999-up FAQ

That was written for a SouperDooty 4R100 but it works the same for an OBS E4OD

Hmmm.

I always wondered this.

Tractors just use hydrolic fluid for the rear diff and such.

Why can you not use that in a transmission?

The short answer is because it will kill the trans. It might work for a while in a manual, but not in an automatic.

ATF is a very complicated fluid. It isn't just oil. It has to lubricate, but it also has to have the right friction characteristics for the friction material. If it is too slippery the clutches will slip and the trans will die quickly. If it isn't slippery enough the shock loading from harsh shifts can break a trans, too. If it doesn't have the right high temp characteristics (the surface of the clutch material gets VERY hot on almost every shift) the fluid will burn up quickly in an otherwise normal trans.
