Hello,
I have A 1979 F250 4wd manual tranny, I was wondering what the difficulties of putting a three inch body lift would be. Is there going to be any modifications needed. Is the steering shaft alright. Am I going to half to ended brake lines. It the shifter going to have to be lengthened. I need help on the amount of work needed to complete this project. My second question is I currently have 33 by 12.50 tires on it, is the truck going to look alright or am I going to have to upgrade to a taller tire?
Or would a suspension lift be better. Or can you just adjust the length of the shackles? Any ideas
Thanks
I have looked into body lifts at our local off roading store and I have been told by the owner that a 2 inch lift is much easier then the 3. With the 3 inch you have to lengthen steering lines and stuff like that. The 4x4 shifter has to be re-bent which can be done by heating it up with a torch then simply re-bending it, I am not sure about the tranny shifter but I imagine. If you can afford a suspension lift the go for it but you will be looking at about $1000 before instilation. Body lifts are much simpler but a much crappier way of lifting the truck. Hope this helps.
You can get a suspension lift for 5-600 bucks. I hear a lot of people talk about body lifts on these boards. Don't do it. Save yourself the trouble. @ inch is much easier than 3 but you still have to lengthen your shifter and t-case shifter, cut out larger holes in the floorboards or rebend them, most likely extend the brake lines, you still have to make some brackets to lift your bumpers otherwise you get that gap. And a body lift just looks like crap. If you need a lift and are really hurting for cash then knock yourself out. But have you seen a truck w/ a body lift? You can see a 2" gap all the way under the bed. If you do this much of a lift you will most likely need new tires. I would only use a body lift as a last resort. After my 6" suspension, and fender cuts. I wouldn't even really consider one for my truck. It just wants to twist too much on the trails. Sometimes can snap bolts. Seen it all too many times. Don't mean to discourage you, but this is what I've seen on body lifts.
I personally do not like body lifts. All they do is lift the body off the frame to make the truck look bigger and make it easier to fit bigger tires. On most trucks you have to relocate the radiator or move the shroud down. Same with steering shafts and shift levers. It it worth the money to go with a suspension lift. You will thank yourself in the end.
