Those that have read my previous posts know that I was having a GP or GPR issue. Well, I swapped the GPR, and nothing changed. No big deal, one less thing to worry about going south in the near future. So, I started in on the GP's today. First started with doing the ohms check. At first, I thought I was messing up the check. So, I took a new one out of the box and tested it just on it's body. Got some results. Went back and tested the old glow plugs individually using the body to get resistance. NOTHING. Absolutely nothing changed on the ohms meter. The enitire driver's side bank of GP's was dead. After swapping the old for the new, I got readings. Ran out of day light to do the passenger side, so that's on tomorrow's menu. Anyone heard of all four on one side going completely out, yet the truck still start?? Wonder what I'll find on the passenger side.
Thanks to all of you have given input. Oh, not to mention, the truck started on the second try, instead of it taking 20 minutes.
Glad to see you're making progress without spending lots of $$$ at the shop. It's unusual for all the glow plugs on one side to go out together, but it's very common for one glow plug to go out, then a little while later another fails, then another and so on. Eventually you end up with a truck that doesn't like to start in cold weather and puts out a lot of black smoke.
My guess is, the bad glow plugs weren't noticed or were just ignored. Kind of a common occurrence in the South. Hope you remembered to re-torque the rocker arm pedestal bolts and lower injector hold down bolts while you were under the valve cover.
oh yes, took the time to re-torque EVERYTHING thile I was in there. That last VC bolt next to the firewall was too much of a PITA to EVER want to take it out again, lol.
Curiousity, what mfg did the factory use for GP's when they assembled our trucks?
They used Motorcraft plugs that are stamped BERU, but I've seen 2 different countries of origin stapmed after the BERU.
I know what you mean. The first time I pulled the valve covers on a 7.3, I remember asking myself Who the **** designed this? Did you find any loose bolts when you were torquing things down? If you did, be sure to let us know if you notice a difference in the way the engine sounds after you take it out for a drive. You won't notice as much difference at idle.
No, everything was torqued either perfectly or a little over. Nothing seemed to move. Now, my truck has 250K on it...the GP's I pulled out are Beru...what are the chances of them being the originals from the factory? Is it possible to go that long on factory GP's? If so...beats the crap out of spark plugs, lol. Sorry, I come from the muscle car world. This being my first and only diesel, I'm learning alot from this site, and I thank you all! If only the entire world liked like this, huh?

this morning my truck wouldn't start, i didn't call a garage-i didn't get it towed-i didn't even get that mad. i came on here-asked for help and $3.00 later(yes three dollars-cost of a box of fuses) and my trucks up and running again.
OK....now what? I'm doing the passenger side and I've got 3 bolts left on the VC. The two next to the A/C box and the back one. How have you guys removed the two next to the box? I cant seem to get anything on them and then have enough torque to take them off. Oh, and talk about a whole lotta crap over that VC!
I used a 1/2 wrench to get the ones by the ac box...
and like Chis above- 3" ext for the back one - did that 3 days ago
Good luck, i hope you get her all sorted out quickly
Whew! Done. Finally. So happy now, it fires right up the first time, and no more smoke. ALL 8 GP's had no resistance. How in the world did the previous owner not notice this issue last winter?
Many thanks to all of you with your insights, suggestions, and tips. VERY much appreciated!
The previous owner didn't know about FTE and didn't want to spend a bunch of money at a shop to get them changed, or he just thought the truck was on it's last legs. Glad to here you got this done.
