Starting problem

Recently I went to start my 1989 F-250 and something broke in the steering column and the key now turns to start but I'll I get is auxillary, no ignition. I can start it by jumping the solenoid post's, but then I can't get it into gear. I tried replacing the tumbler but it still won't start. Anyone have any ideas?

The ign. switch actuator in the steering column is probably broken. This part also locks the shift lever in park. The part is only about $6.00 but is a PITA to replace.
You have to pull the steering wheel then the turn signal mount plate then the column shroud. That gives access to the actuator.
Do a search of this forum page and you should come up with a detailed of how to. Good luck.

I pulled the wheel off and with some work I got the old ignition actuator out.
It was easy to pull out because it was broken, but I cannot get the new part installed. There seem's to be no room to get the actuator in the hole straight. The mounting piece that the steering wheel and signal light switch mount to,is in the way and I can't see any way of removing it. There are two pin's with threaded holes in the them, which the bracket pivot's on for the tilt steering. I can tilt the wheel all the way down but I still need another 1/2" to get the actuator rod in straight so it will slide all the way in. Can Anyone Help?

You are right there is not enough room to get the new actuator fitted.
It is necessary to slide the top bit of the steering column up a bit to get the room. It helps if you have a helper for this bit.
Going on memory, look on the steering shaft just below where the steering wheel splines are and you should see a small snap ring. Remove this.
You are now going to have to pull the tilt pins out. You should find that one of the small screws you took out earlier will screw into the tilt pins and you can grip this with pliers and pull the tilt pins right out. Be careful here you can loose a small spring from the tilt mechanism.
Ease the column back just enough to fit the actuator and then back into position and push the tilt pins back in.
It is a real PITA so good luck.
