Both my 78 & 76 model F100's reverse lights fail to activate when put into reverse. The bulbs are good, ground soild on tailights assembly and all lights work. Is there a fuse or linkage on the columns ??
Maybe the neutral safety switch needs adjustment if you have an auto. I'm not totally sure about this since I have a stick. I have a switch that activates my lights on the back of the transmission.
Thanks guys; I guess I should've mention they both are automatic, 78 with a C-6 & my 76 with a C-4.
I'll check into replacing those items and see if that solves the problem. I'm not too worry about my 76 model; but my 78 will be my kids first truck.
What's the lever on the column that's hard wire into a lever pin type block on the steering column, I though that was the netural safety switch????????
Thanks;
Mitch

Mitch, on 1973/77's, the NSS is located at the bottom of the steering column (C4/C6: C7TZ7A247A - Motorcraft SW600-fits: 1967/77).
It's activated by a Y shaped spring steel "selector lever" (DOTZ7B097B) that the pointed end that fits into the NSS is notorious for breaking off.
The selector lever fits thru a hole in the mast jacket (steering column outer cover), and snaps into the shift tube.
The same lever was used 1965/77.
----------------------------------
On 1978/79's the NSS (C6: D8TZ7A247A Motorcraft SW1489) is located on the transmission.
Before I'd buy that 100 dollar (!) NSS for the '76, I'd check that lever. I'll betcha the end has broken off, or it has lost tensile strength, and popped out of the shift tube.
Ford just obsoleted the DOTZ7B097B lever, but there are 100's still around at dealers and obsolete parts vendors, one of which isn't too far away.

Good 2 know.. thanks for that because my truck is doin the same thing. 78 with c6. but yes there is a fuse in the fuse box..says "b/u" or something. My fuse used to blow because the choke was wired into the same circuit. not the same prob this time. fuse is good.
Must be a 30th anniversary bonus on the 78's. My NSS works intermittantly but just passed Texas state safety inspection three hours ago. The "technician" told me it was great, except that the parking brake needed tightening, but that he'd "let it go this time". That parking brake starts to grab about 1/16th of an inch of the way down its run and both of Lance Armstrong's legs couldn't get it to touch the floor! I'll be counting on his incompetence next year when it needs to be renewed.

Hah! Hes prolly used to the type that just go right down to the floor, and thinks yours must be broken. Do they actually test them on a grade with the truck in N to see if it will hold?
Back to the topic, the lights in my 73 will come on if I make sure to push the gear shift lever away from me(it seems tight for some reason), sometimes I have to hold it back to keep them on. Kinda annoying I guess, but at least they work.
Again; excellence is hard to find; but not here on FTE, I remember the (NSS) device on the column of my 76 model, I've replace the column back when I first got the truck, but I just figure the 78 was the same set up. Thanks Bill for clarifing that for me, now I can troubleshoot alittle better.
if you have to replace the "pin" in the nss it is still availible, im not sure who i got mine through but it cost me about 30$ after shipping. took a few minutes to get it in, then just stuck a drill bit in the whole while in neutral and tightened the retainig screws, havent had an issue since. mine was broken off.
Thanks Clgreer for the tech advice; I did check on ordering a NSS for my 78 model from A-zone today, there $39.99. Will be next on the to-do list this week, then I'll look for the one on my 76 model, after I finish the rebuild of my 78.
Again as I mention excellence is hard to come by, but not here on FTE.
Ok - my truck won't start and I have a sneaking suspicion that it's that NSS. I can't find the stupid thing in ANY of my manuals on a diagram anywhere. The way it's shaped makes me think it's on the column but you say that on the 79 auto it's on the transmission? Where?
On the drivers side of the trans near the pan gasket area; can't recall the bolt size; its kinda roll with a wire harness type connection; bolts on with a 3/8 drive I beleive. If this doesn't help; go to the local auto parts store; have them pull up a pic or actual part and show you what it looks like.
Hope this helps.
Oh; my daughter 78 model problem was / is in the steering column; to activtate the reverse lights; I have to either try & adjust the leakage; or replace the column with another automatic column. Just though I throw that in here; since I forgot to update my issue with no back-up lights.
