With the yearly epademic outbreak of "ItalavtawatilafterXmastosis" in full swing, I thought it would be a good time to MAF my 87' 302 w/25k on a rebuilt engine & Trans. It runs really well but after a while not getting under the hood feel like I'm trying to quit smoking. Although a MAF conversion is the "wisdom tooth extraction of mods". Really should be done, but noboby looks foreward to it. I've noticed that there are some 94'-5' OBD1's w/MAF's stock. Are thier tranny's also the reason I'm told to use a stanger for the donor instead or just because their so rare. Are the stangers OBD1's? And when the conversion is done, will it essentially be an OBD2 system w/ an OBD1 test connector or what? I'm trying to get all my ducks in a row from start to finish. I don't want to find out 3/4 track that one of the ducks was a really hormomally challenged turkey. I just want do it whatever way that provides the maximum benifits. When I'm done, I don't want "could, would, or should have" in my vocabulary. As far as waiting to recieve a MAF Conversion as a gift, today's my bithday and it's not lookin good (1 more Tie I should have enough of them to tie myself off the 2nd story banister). If you hold your breath for one, if you ever wondered, after red and blue, comes purple so I'm going to do it now before antisapation is replaced by memory loss.
Quickly, a MAF conversion using either 5.0 mustang parts or 94-95 truck parts will give you an OBD-1 sequential mass air EFI system. It's also nearly certain your '87 doesn't have an electronic tranny like most of the '94-95 trucks, and since the computer controls said tranny, operating without said tranny attached will make it upset, and installing the necessary wiring for said tranny in your truck is a whale of a job, you have been advised to steer clear of using these late model truck computers.
