A good fuel additive should prevent gelling. When it gets cold here in Pa. I double dose with White bottle Diesel Kleen or Stanadyne.

What are you paying for these in your area? I am planning a trip soon and was wondering where to get these and how much they cost.

Well, had my first gelling experience tonight on the way home from work..not fun. I have noticed that the stations in central illinois are now posting signs by the diesel pumps that the fuel "MAY" contain a biodiesel blend anywhere between 5-20%, there is a sign on the pump where I filled up(mobil), stating winterized to -20. So, I have the 38-gallon tank, filled up and put in over double the amount at the beginning of the week as I knew the cold air was coming. Temps today were about -10, truck sat out all day. Started truck mid-day, let run for 20-minutes. Started truck before leaving for home about 5-10 minutes, then I leave work and get on the bypass to go home. About half-way around the truck just looses rpm and dies. Pull off to the side, re-try starting, nothing. I let the truck sit for a bit, then it re-fires. Limp to the exit and dies again at the ramp. Let sit, re-fire, limp down to a gas station. I let the truck sit in the lot running while I get my diesel mechanic on the phone. Meanwhile, the check engine light has come on, I check the codes and have low fuel pressure code. I explain this to my mechanic and he says gelling. I state I did not think this was possible as I used more than double the amount of additive(power service-white bottle). He states he has had MANY phone calls today stating the same thing. He says you can never use enough of the additive in this weather and to pour more in. So, I limp the truck home to the heated garage, crank up the heat and dump another 2-bottles in the tank. I drained the fuel filter, all was clear diesel, no water. I took the truck for a short ride to "mix" the additive and hope for the best tomorrow. I am hoping that the station or the area got a bad batch, but I will definitely be changing stations!
sounds just like my ordeal tonight. Will the engine light go off tomm morning? Nothing bothers me more than a engine light on the dash. I pray my truck runs good in the morning after sitting all night in a heated garage.
Not sure, it might clear if the issue resolves itself, might have to take it to the dealer to clear. I have the EVO monitor and cleared them on the fly after asking my diesel mechanic if I was good to clear after getting truck warmed back up again.
Let me look on the bottle I have not used DK in a while but I am thinking .5oz per gal don't hold me to it I will check.
I can not get Bio where I live. I did hear it gel's quicker but I had no idea it would as fast as it has for this thread you guys may want to get a bottle of the 911 it has stuff in it that would stop you from using it all the time. I never had to use it yet but I hear it can get you running again.
It is -3 here in Pa. today I think I am going to drop in another 12oz of Stanadyne tonight to be safe.
Keep use posted on the gel troubles.

Well, after dumping 3-more bottles in last night, I drove to work today...-18 degrees and did fine. Truck sat out for about 6-hours before I ran an errand and all was still good. Temp was still only about -5 degrees. The drive home 4-hours later was also okay, temp was around 5-degrees. I still need to contact the station and register a complaint, as I am hoping that others will do the same if they had the same issues.
Power Service Products ( DieselKleen and Diesel Fuel Supplement), and Stanadyne are definitely the best products IMO. A couple years ago I ran several different fuel supplements in my peterbilt, and kept very careful notes on the results. DieselKleen and Stanadyne were far and away the best. Howes was a distant third and Lucas did nothing at all. I was checking mileage improvement, boost, smoke, and soot in the oil from oil analysis. DieselKleen lowered the soot in my oil by 40%. This is in a mechanical CAT engine (3406B 500HP) so it may be different in an electronically controlled engine. It doesn't get cold enough on the left coast to worry about fuel gelling at all.
We got down to -33 F the other morning, my garage is heated slightly and was 12 above when I pulled out. I parked at my clinic for about 3 hours at -25 F. Have also spent 4-6 hours outside in -20 to -25 a couple of other times this year.
I run straight number 2 that I buy at the local Marathon station. I don't know what they add to it, I know it's something, but I don't put anything in it nor do I run a mix with number 1. No gelling problems whatsoever. I have been worried it's still coming, but so far, so good. I have a couple of bottles of Diesel Kleen in the cabinet in the garage, but haven't opened them yet.
