EGR Technical Questions
I read the Tech folder and did not find my answer so here it goes.
What are the symptoms of a faulty EGR?
A good friend of mine has a 2003 6.0 F350 4X4 with a 6spd @ 120K miles.
The engine runs better when cold
Will intermittently lose power
There is not a CEL or any codes present
It will idle rough and just sound awful. (He said it makes a funny noise but he is not mechanically inclined so I cannot tell you much yet)
Can be hard to start
Will send out blue smoke (intermittently)
Any thoughts?

You've pretty much listed the symptoms!!
Unplug the EGR valve and see if that makes a difference, or pull out the EGR and clean / replace it.

If you can haggle some discounts from your Ford parts counter, you can get one for a litle over $100 and do it yourself.
Some folks have bought them off of ebay (and many examples of buying the wrong part) - personaly, I think this is too risky.

I had the same symptoms with my 06 6.0. Got to the point it wouldn't start. Dealer found no codes etc.Said I had a demon...So they did take the egr valve out and cleaned it and put it back in and so far so good. Not sure if that was the issue or not. But I haven't had any problem since..

What I have done is purchase a dummy valve off of e-bay, mount the old one on near by and let it open and close so everyone "feels good". You will never have that problem again. (also, cleaner oil, lower EGT, and longer lasting truck, ete ete ete)
