Well, I have this 03 Eddie Bauer Expedition and today it started doign something different. I put it in A4WD to go across a wet grassy area. After I got off of that I switched it back to 2WD. Now when going down the road it makes a roaring noise. When switching from 2WD to A4WD, you now hear a clunking noise. Also, when it is in A4WD the roaring noise goes away. Any ideas???? This thing just isn't the 99.
Sounds like its not completely disengaging...have you tried backing up a bit just after taking it out of A4WD?
When was the last you used A4WD? It could be a universal also, when you put a load on it (engaged) it tends to quite out. Do the simple things, check U's and such, make sure your vacuum assist hose for your 4WD isn't plug either.
Here is an update:
It makes the loud noise still, but now when switching from 2WD to 4WD there is a loud clunking noise. Also, my hubby got under it and the front diff is wet. Any ideas???
How do you check the fluid levels?
My hubby added more fluid and added the modifier to it. But I still get the clunkign noise when going from 2WD to 4WD and the roaring noise ( sounds like loud road noise) is still happening. I don't want to ruin it. Any ideas at all???
It could be a couple of things...don't be afraid to take it to a local shop and ask them to evaluate it. Most shops will do this for free just to get your business.
Initially though ...and this is just guestimating possabilities...
...universal(s) have dried up and the bearings are or have fallen out. This includes front output shaft universals, front drive shaft and rear drive shaft.
...possible output bearing worn and causing the seal to leak.
...synchro for 2wd to 4wd and back going/gone out.
...transfer case fluid low and causing slippage going in and out of engagement.
...make sure lockout hubs are greased.
Those are just a few, but most likely. Ask a local shop to check your fluids also, unless the hubby feels like getting under it while its 9 out.
