So it looks like my transmission is toast. I have 180,000 miles on my 99' XLT 2x4 5.4L and now when I put it in gear and step on the gas I have to rev it to 5000 rpms before the drive shaft starts to slowly spin. I do not hear any grinding or noise from the tranny and the fluid is red and full.
My questions is could this be a simple fix with a rebuild kit. I can still feel it shift through the gears when I put it in R D 3 2 1 so I'm hopping that there wasn't major damage. Is it worth trying a rebuild kit first?
I was going to add the possibility of a bad torque converter to my post to see if that raised any questions. I've been reading all about rebuilding trannies and found that the TC is what disengages the engine from the tranny and that what this feels like. It feels like each gear is actually neutral.
I'm going to try the TC first and then go from there. What do you mean by pukes into the tranny?
...the TC will disintegrate and create mini needles and your pump will suck them in and distribute them thoughout your tranny....in-so-facto ..rebuild time.
