Explorer trail vehicle?
Hello all;
I'm toying with building a trail vehicle and am thinking along the lines of an explorer or a sport trac. What was the last year of the explorer and the Ranger sharing significant components in the running gear? I am looking for something that has reasonable parts avalability. On that same note, what was the first year of the sport trac?
Thoughts? Input? Ideas?

Probably prior to the SLA front suspension, which was '96. ('97?) The sohc V6 is desireable for power, but the cam tensioners can be trouble, although not fatal trouble according to my mechanic. The 5 speed automatic is trouble and it's trouble to fix. The older 4 speeds are not great either, to the point that some change to a Chev 700r for the durability and lower first gear.
Plenty of early Exploders go quite a distance w/o trouble with the trans, so it's possible. Rear axles go south somewhere over 100k, if not 40k. (bearings from the low bidder, you see...)
There are tons of them at bargain prices.....
