Its the fair market system.... either you can compete or you cant, and when you cant the government will bail you out!!! Oops, did i just say that! Truthfully, i almost never go to Wally world if i can find something similiarly priced from elsewhere. I certainly wouldnt begrudge anyone that wants to shop there. If working conditions are so harsh, get another job, and dont tell me there are no jobs...... move to where the jobs are!!! It used to be the American way! Dan

I tell my friend Byron when he sends me his anti wal mart email I just tell him to shop where he wants and Ill shop where I want.
You told Byron the right thing. I don't like them, but I will shop them out of necessity. I also believe as you do that it's up to the consumer to make their choice.

From the above link ""willfully" allowing employees to work off the clock" So some moron didn't know or didn't care that they were off the clock and that is Walmart's fault?

I've had many friends work at Walmart and it was one of the better, if not the best, low skill job in the area. Starting wages were higher than other places and their raises and available benefits beat anything else for the skill level job plus their yearly bonuses which were usually in the thousands of dollars for the base workers. The few times I am in a Safeway or King Supers or any other grocery store I can't believe the prices people pay for the same stuff Walmart has far cheaper.

This was in the days when Sam Walden still ran the place. Whoever he sold it to is responsible for the chinese crap. The only thing I don't like about wal-mart these days are the employees. Heaven forbid they actually have to HELP someone.

Gots to agree here....I am willing to pay a bit more for the same product from a place that actually values thier customers. Not Wal-Mart bashing here, but any place, that doesn't care about customer service won't get my bussiness. Personaly, I try to avoid Wal-Mart. Just a personal choice, but kudos to the corporation for growing like they did. You only get that huge by doing something right.

Talking

The best thing I like about walmart is that they are going against the major high doller drug stores and offer drugs much cheaper. It about time the high price drug stores who for sure are in bed with the drug makers and insurance companys had some real competition.

I don't really like W*M, or any huge chain store. Why? Because they drive the 'mom and pop' stores out of business. I like the small-town atmosphere of the small stores. You can sit down and make conversation with the employees/owners, ask questions and they will know the answer. At the big stores, the employees treat you as an annoyance, and generally don't know a TV from their corn hole...

However, going to W*M at 1am with a couple friends is always entertaining!

Actually, yes it is WM's fault. They didn't just "allow" people to work off the clock, they required people to work through breaks and to work extra hours without pay. There have been numerous successful lawsuits against WM for this kind of behavior - enough so that the bigshots in Arkansas can't claim they didn't know what was going on. It is the culture of the company and a way of making a few extra bucks.

Think about it - it is the perfect business model. Come into an area, pay off a few local politicians to get a store built and then offer lowball prices to get everyone shopping in the store. Put all the local competition out of business and now you not only have a captive customer base, you also have a captive employee base who really need to keep their jobs so they'll "go the extra mile" to keep their job. Then you can raise prices back up.

WM would go bankrupt waiting for my business. I don't fault anyone for shopping there though.

Sam didn't "sell" it to anyone, the Walton family is still firmly in control of the empire.

Blame it on the public's acceptance of 'lowest common denominator' products.
The business model works when the consumer can no longer afford to buy anything but garbage.

At times it's hard to be helpful when you're working your a$$ off to meet stocking quotas.
At least they usually have enough registers open, unlike some other "box" store's front ends.

ive got different reason not to go to walymart. if any one has deliverd to a wal-mart DC youll no what im talkin about. for 10 years i pulled a refrigerated trailer delivering food all over the USA and wal-mart was the worst, youd have an apiontment time so cool lets get unloaded but not at a wal-mart if you was on time you might get backed into a door with in 4-5 hours of your apiontment time then youd sit and wait another 4-10 hours for them to unload there stuff off your trailer after you pay them to.(dont matter if it was 5boxes or 22 pallet)then it would take another 1-3 hours just for them to let you out the gate. so thats why i hate wal-mart,all that messin around didnt get ya no extra pay either

Their success is entirely dependent upon the consumer. If they did not satisfy the customers needs...GLOBALLY... I might add....They would not be around. Their business model is obviously successful.

Sam Walton's legacy and the American Business dream lives at Walmart. What business owner wouldn't want to have Walmart's success?

In regards to beating up vendors for lower prices: I have customers that have walked away from Walmart business and I have customers that clamored for their business. In some cases, they wanted the Walmart business to keep manufacturing lines running at very minimal profit. When they run other customers products they made money. The Walmart business justified the expense of updated equipment which made them more profitable with their other product lines. If a vendor takes the Walmart beating...there are likely other financial reasons for doing so. One of my customers went out of business because he thought he didn't need them anymore.

For those that don't know...Walmart is a GREAT contributor to local charities, athletic booster clubs, etc...returning a huge amount of money back to the immediate surrounding community. Every time my daughter's drill team goes to them for something they respond quickly with either $$$, product, or space at the front door. Target BTW...returns nothing locally. They won't even allow Toys For Tots or the Salvation Army bell ringers in front of their doors.
