I was thinking of droping a 6.9 in an old 79 F-250 4x4. Is it alot more complicated then just changing motor mounts or what else do I need to worry about.
You will have to fab up or modify the frame towers [where the mounts bolt to], diesel trans, return fuel line, larger radiator and possibly heavier front springs.
There's other odds and ends but this will give you an idea.
I've done it. The frame rails are about 3-4 inches narrower on these old trucks. I could not get the engine way down in frame rails...had to move engine towers and make my own engine mounts...had to put spacers to jack up the tranny higher. Put a 3" body lift on to help clear everything.
A bigger radiator woudl be nice...mine overheats if I have to put it under any load for a few minutes like climbing a long grade.
Wiring...and all kinds of little odds and ends.
The leaf springs on the old f250 and 350s will handle the weight no problem.
Na...think the radiator is original. It is 3 core. Might even be blocked up some for all I know. One of these days I will change it out....just cant make up my mind on what to do and dont at the moment.
I used the largest one made for 77-79 F series, think it was called super cooling.
Never had an overheat problem--Florida summers, A/C full blast. Thing is you'll need help putting it in, it's one heavy bugger !
