My 2000 7.3 will start everytime and runs great. However on initial start up the engine will start then run for about 1 sec. then it sounds as if you turned the key off on a gas burner, then back on it will fire up with loud diesel knock and settle down.
Any thoughts? I really don't like the sound of the "key off back on" knock but all is normal after this first of the day morning start. Thanks Jim
Two questions: How cold is it been getting overnight? and what weight of oil are you running? It sound like you are getting the romps. Remember that the injectors use oil to fire and if the oil is thick, not all the injectors are going to be happy at first start. You might want to plug in when possible and/or change to 5w/40 Sythn oil. Just changing to Sythn cured my romps.

I think you are right about "romps".. good description.
Temps here 45F at night. However I always use Rotella 10w40. My transmission failed and was replaced and they did a complementary oil change. I specifically told them R10w40, but found they used the wrong fluid in the power steering and radiator. Now I wonder about the oil. I have not been using synthetic because when I emailed Shell about oil change freq. they told me the synthetic frequency was the same as base Rotella.
Does synthetic really help with the romps? and how long do you go between changes. Thanks for the info. Jim
This is my first winter using Sythn oil and my truck is not a daily driver. However, when the conditions are snowy, I take my truck into work verses my beater POS Honda. I do forget to plug it in and have to start it at 10 degree weather without the romps now. I could never say that with dino oil in it. As far as I can tell, the GP system was working fine with both types of oil in it so the sythn is the difference.
BTW, I plan on going about 5-6K on the Sythn. I'm going to get an Oil Analysis this oil change and see what they say. If it looks good, I might stretch the next oil change longer. for 18 bucks a gallon, I'm hoping I can get more miles between oil changes.
They say 5,000 on the 15 w-40 weight so i,ve been running syn5-40 Rotella at 10,000 mile intervals with no bypass filtration and no problems. Didn't get an oil ana. done, problably should have but will with this Shaeffers 9000 syn.

That would be great.
I normally run 3000 on rotella and would like to extend. My wife's car requires Mobile 1 and it runs 14,000 miles between changes. My car also goes 12,000 between Mobile 1 changes. I was hoping with rotella syn I could go longer. All my other cars for the last 20 years used full synthetic and went 10,000+ miles between changes and all went well over 200000 miles with no issues.
I will change when the weather warms. Truck (4wd) too high to fit in workshop so I have to wait until $$ arrives and cold rain sleet stops.
Update. Yesterday is snowed and was only about 28F. Started truck this morning to the romps again. Hard to start, slow cranking and the battery was just about to give out when it caught. Then It started romping again. Romped for about 1 minute before smoothing out.
So I bought Rotells full Synthetic 5w40 and a new filter. Changed it today. Will see if tomorrow makes for better starting.
