My dads 06 f250 has blown the power steering hose again within a year of the last one. About the same time last year. He said on start up it started whining really loud and then he noticed fluid on the ground. Temp was only 6f. Wondering he should push for a new pump with this happening twice within a year. All the fluid was changed when the new hoses were put on. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks.
The pump is probably strong, but there is a blockage somewhere else in the system. I would assume on the pressure side, thinking that the pressure required to pop a crimped fitting should overwhelm a barbed/clamped fitting. If he can get it under warranty I would go ahead have the gear box replaced.
It is still under warrenty. It blew about 8 inches from the the crimp. I will tell him to try for a new gear box. But the pump always whines like mad in the cold.
If it's only whining when cold, try a different fluid. Unfortunately, I think most fluids will be thick until they warm up. I notice when the temps are below 50, I hear a whine and my steering is a little stiffer. I am using Royal Purple ATF, I don't know what might work better, but it's been good for me.
