Ok, to start out I am pretty sure its NOT the brakes, cause the sound does not change when I apply them. BUT to give you a description of what the sound is like. it actually sounds like while coasting the brakes are just skimming the rotors. at least that is what it sounds like to me. course when I press the brake pedal it stays constant as I roll, but will stop when the vehicle stops rolling.
can it be the rear bearings on the axle? or maybe the parking brake. but the parking brake don't work really and I dont use it. cables have been torn at a bit.
anyway any Idea's would be appriciated. Front in 4x4 is all other sort of noises, but I can only afford one problem at a time.
I am going to assume the sound is coming from the back since you ask about the parking brake and the rear axle. I have worked on a couple of explorers that the parking brake shoes had come apart and were dragging the drum. When hitting the brakes there was no difference since it was the not the parking brake getting pressed. The parking brakes are inside the rear disc as the rear disc rotors are also drums for the parking brake.
Yeah I am aware of that, but it didn't do it before and I never use the parking brake. so why start now is the question.
next time I drive I will put on the parking brake while driving and see if that does anything. something I didnt' think of cause like I said I NEVER use the dame thing cause it don't work. never did since I bought the truck.
thanks
My dad never used his on his explorer either but when I went to get it and take it down to my shop at work it sounded like the brakes were bad but hitting the brakes did nothing when I got to the shop I had the window done and could hear them from the back so I checked the disc and they were fine then pulled the rotor and the carbon had separated from the shoe and was dragging all the time sounded just like the brakes were shot. Oh and the shoes and carbon looked like new no wear at all the metal part of the shoes was what was dragging and both sides were the same way. Happened on another explorer I worked on to.
Interesting. I will try to take care of that soon. cause this weekend we are going to have a HI of some Neg temps and my truck don't fit in the garage that is not heated anyway. the second bad is my little comuter car is not running right. when it rains it pours so to speak.
I had a parking brake explode on me shortly after I got the truck. On mine the driver's assembly froze up and broke into a bunch of tiny pieces, and then rattled around inside the cap. I had to replace the rotor too, the impact of the explosion, implosion, whatever you want to call it, put a crack down one side of the rotor.
You might figure out which wheel its coming from and start pulling everything apart, see if you can't get a better idea of whats going on.
