I,ve had four v-10's since 1999. Latest is 08 F-250. Have no complaints with these motors. Never driven a 5.4 equipped F-250. Don't feel like messing around with these sales people just yet. There are a bunch of 08 F-250 trucks around here with the 5.4. Good deals to be had. So the question is, what do you all think of the 5.4 as far as mileage and power compared to the 6.8
Thanks. Best, Charlie
The consensus usually is you get about the same gas mileage, but less power, especially when towing. Getting the 4.10 gears helps out with the power, but most agree if you are going to be hauling or towing with the truck the upgrade to the V10 is well worth it.

comparing a 99 5.4 to a 2008 5.4 is apples to oranges.
The hp rating of the 2005+ 5.4 is right about where the early v10's were.
Mileage? to say they are similar is to lie.
unless a v10 normally gets 15.5+mpg.
If you work the truck hard regularly a v10 may pay for itself.
towing heavy a v10 is maybe a little better on fuel. otherwise no.
I have a 2005 f250 5.4 and I find it very adequate.
460 engine hp rating 1984.......214hp. 362 ft/lb
460 enginehp RATING 1998....245 395ft/lb
v10 engine hp 1999-2004....310 425ft/lb
3v 5.4 engine hp rating ...........300 365ft/lb
3v V-10...362 hp 457 ft/lb
I like my 5.4 for the power it has. Sure, no matter what I drive would like more power, but it has pulled anything I have asked it too. Mine has 3.73's, when pulling I would like the 4.10's. But 80% of the time I am not pulling a trailer, and I like the higher cruise speed I get with the 3.73's, without reving the motor as much. I like to cruise at 70 to 75mph, and with my 3.73's that keeps it under 2500rpm.
I think it would depend what you get the truck for, what kind of work will it be doing. Though if they give you a good enough deal it may be worth it. I have a 2000 5.4L and haven't had any trouble towing or carrying anything.
I had a 2002 5.4 2valve f250. I got 14 mpg back and forth to work and 18mpg on trips unloaded. I now have a 2007 6.0 f250 and get 16 back and forth to work and 19 on a trip unloaded. Pulling my enclosed trailer witch weighs 7000lb from eastern pa to ohio through the applician mountains 350 miles one way I got 11mpg in my 5.4 and in my deisel I get 12mpg. I might add I did the speed limit with both truck witch was 65 to 70. The deisel has much more power, but the 5.4 did the job without any problem. I never had a v10, but I cannot not imagine you would be getting more than 8 or 9mpg towning. My next truck will be another 5.4, the 6.0 just costs to much to maintenance. I might add if you are really towing heavy all this goes out the window, get the deisel.
Wish my dad would have gone for the v10 with the mileage he is getting on his 06 f250 with 5.4. His is kind of a dog but do not know if it has problems from the beginning.
All of the v10's around here are getting as good as the 5.4's.

15.5+ mpg????? Give me some of what your drinkin or trade me trucks
In my experience the only big difference between the 5.4 and a 6.8 of respective years is the pulling power. I drive a few V-10s in my day and unloaded they did not feel and faster or more responsive than the 5.4L. I was quite disapointed with the V10's i've driven unloaded, but if I had to do it again I'd get a V10.
my 5.4 in cold weather gets 8 and 12, and in the warm about 10 and 14mpg. Which is right on par with the equivalent year V10 with same gears and same conditions.
My 2007 5.4 with 3.73 gears generally gets 15-18 MPG highway steady cruising, 10-12 around town, 12 towing the trailer pictured below (3500 pounds when empty) and about 9-10 towing when loaded.
No, it can't tow as much as a V-10, but it tows my 8000 pound load very well.
But, what you select depends on your requirements and your tastes. Drive a 5.4L and judge for yourself.
Get the V-10. For one your familiar with them and going to a 5.4 may be a dissapointment for you. Second it's a $600 option, even less when you figure out the percentage off sticker you payed. Third the fuel mileage penalty is fairly small. Finally, it's rated to tow the same as the diesel in most applications so you won't be "wanting or wishing" for more power if a big tow job lies ahead.
I had an 06' F150 with the 5.4 and thought it was anemic at best and towing my 8,500lb boat was nerve wracking. With my current rig the boat is a non-issue when in tow.
