Ok I'm looking for some good strap hinges for my barn doors they measure 7FT wide by 14FT high. I think it is about 365 LBS. I want them to be about 28 or 36 inches long. Any leads?
Don't know if they have to be that long. Check with a tractor supply store or one of the big box stores. TSC has 10" hinges you would probably need 4/side.
Go to the junk yard and get 4 Ford truck door hinges for each door. Will hold a lot of weight. Use carriage bolts to fasten them to the wall and door. Use large washers or a steel plate on the opposite side of the door the hinges are on to prevent pull through.
I have made heavy duty dock hinges from 1/4" plate and 1" sch.40 pipe. A piece of plate on each side, cut the pipe into 2-3" pieces, weld to alternating sides, and run a 3/4" round stock pin through it to complete the hinge.
Thanks for the link!!!
To other suggestions don't think truck door hinges would hold not enough surface area covered for that wieght.
As too not needing them that long or big, currently I have T style hinges three per door that are about 28 inches long and 2 inches wide that set on a pin type bolt that screws into the beams well they are bent and won't allow the door to close correctly. Previous owner welded plate over to trine correct this but didn't do a good job never got the hinge straight. I think the material also need to be around 1/4 thick. Might have been off on the doors wieght they have 1 inch thick decking boards and are framed with 4x6 all around and then cross beams in an x.
Tractor supply doesn't sale any thing heavy enough. The original hinges would have been from around 1860 time frame.
