As I have said before I am a 1st time powerstroke owner. I have 28,000 miles on my 07' and have never put in any fuel additives to my diesel fuel. Should I be? Is there a fluid that would clean my injectors when added to the fuel ? After finally breaking down and buying a $51,000 truck I would like to see it last as long as possible.
It's like an oil change. Sure you can probably go 15k miles without one, but why?
Think of it as preventative maintenance. I like the stuff from Power Service. Personally, I htink about it this way. I'm paying $120 for a fill-up as is. What's an extra $5 for some added peace of mind? While others are more fluent I'm sure, here's my take on it. The Anti-Gel in the white bottle is great for winter and keeping your fuel from clogging your filters. The Cetane booster in the grey bottle is good for the diesel fuel combustability quality rating. Think of it as diesel's equivilent of Octane for gas. Higher ratings do make a difference in these, though, where as Octane wouldn't do much for an engine designed to run on lower settings.
Still, I'm still learning volumes by the day, so I'd keep poking around and see what you can find.
Some folks swear by fuel additives - others say they are not needed. I personally have seen several cases of bad fuel contamination from the pumps. I think using the correct/best fuel additives is wise. If you choose to use a fuel additive and IF YOU BELIEVE IN FOLLOWING THE FORD MANUAL - use one that demulsifies water and contains no alcohol. Additives can clearly prevent gelling in the cold, strip water, and improve lubricity and boost cetane (improves combustion efficiency). Some help reduce soot, reduce corrosion, clean fuel system, etc. Again - you choose.
I add BIODIESEL for lubricity at the 2% level - .6 gal/tank - (along w/ the Stanadyne Performance Formula for the other benefits).
