So I have been wondering if my FICM is on its way out. Today after the truck sat outside all day at 19* when I went to start it I didnt hear any noise form the glow plugs. Normally I hear them rattle/buzz some. Today nothing. So I did my usual run the glow plug cycle 2x's and it starts however its running rough and smoking a little. It does this for about 30-45 seconds and then clears up. I was going to take it in but wanted to get some adivce (maybe BowTireHatr will chime in) but dont want to waste the 100 deductable if there is nothing wrong.
what was the color of the smoke black/white/blue, do you have the inductive heat flash?
are running dino or syn oil? when was last oil/fuel filter change? did you try and scan for any codes from ecm? once the truck warmed up did it still run rough or smooth? are you using any fuel anti gel?
Not sure what color the smoke was it s dark out here at 4:30 in the afternoon. yes I use and Anti-gel, i use MC filters and 15w40 oil...never had a problem with it. There are no codes in it. When warm it does not run rough. Like I said after 45 secs. a minuite at most it runs just fine. Oil has less than 500 miles on it and the ful filters may have 150 miles on them.
If you are running a tune, the higher hp ones dont like cold weather very much at first start up. My hybrid race started up rough and surged until the truck got warm then all was good. Its the nature of the beast
I am not sure which flash I have exactly, last time it was in the shop was Feb. of 08 and I can try to dig up the paper work or requst another oasis I am not sure if they flashed it back then. I am running a tune its the street tune from innovative. If I plug the truck in I can hear the glow plugs rattle and the truck starts right up and runs great.
I would definitely take it in for inductive heat flash. and pay the labor and not the deductible it save you 5- 10 bucks. i was getting blue smoke and rough idle when cold and after I requested the flash it acts like a completely different truck now.... the way it should
I am still looking for the paper work. We have been running calls since thursday night. We got hammered with ice up here so no time to look for that let alone sleep. I will post back when I find the flash/work that was done last time.
