97 E250 w/4.2 tranny shudder

I notice a slight shudder/vibration upon deceleration in my E250 w/4.2L engine. Can someone tell me what tranny would be mated with this motor? It's probably due for a fluid replacement, should I opt to drop the pan or would a flush and fill be sufficient? Or could this be in the rear end that I am feeling the shudder come from?

A shudder on deceleration is likely a bad U-joint on the drive shaft.

And a '97 E250 would be an E4OD/4R100.

Hmmm, that is reassuring. At least that is something I can handle myself. I'll crawl under there and inspect.
thanks Club

The only trans with the 4.2L engine was the 4R70W.

I agree with the u-joint diagnosis.

A 4R in a 250?

You sure?

I seem to remember getting some fleet vans in with the 4.2 and the E4OD. I do remember doing some fleet trucks that had the 4.2 and the 4R with them but they were F150s.

I didn't think Ford installed the 4R70W in the heavier trucks either. It would be an E4OD in '97. The 4.2 was almost as powerful as a 351w so I wouldn't think the 4R70 would have held up in ford's eyes.

I'm positive. It's a 4R70W.
