Interesting that you should post this. These studs can be replaced with either an entire bolt that attaches from the top, or u can use a piece off bolt, using only the treaded portion. Then you can tighten everything up with just a nut on top.
You will have to use a nut with an insert to prevent it from becoming loose, since there will no longer be a hole for a cotter key, and making a hole will require you to run everything down, and make a mark only to have to remove everything again, and drill a set of holes in the right heigth.
I just went through this the other day, so I am telling you this from experience.
You will know that you can perform all of this while the case is still in the truck. It is tight, but having the correct 3/8" ratchet with a flex head makes real easy work of this.
I used a set of chevy truck body bushings and did not have to make any mods to the bushings.
That hex on the factory fastener is there only to tighten the stud to the case itself. I have found that making studs is easy, and does not take much to tighten up, even while in the truck.
Once pressure is applied to the new fasteners, they do not find thier way out, and seem to stay tight.
Poly bushings really made a huge difference in my 74 trucks, and removed some small vibrations that were in the truck.
I'll share a couple of pics:
Side by side, old VS new

New bushings installed:

Another View of the other side:

Keep in mind that I did have to use some larger washers on top of the new bushings, but for the 20 bucks that I had spent on everything it was a killer improvement.

Much luck. This is as easy as it gets.
