I installed the AIS shortly after Ford came out with this option in 2003. I bought it from the Ford dealer I ordered/purchased my truck from; Wilmes Ford in Altus OK. Since they were working on fixing an oil leak near the oil pan (engine out) they just stuck this one back in. I'm a firm believer in filtration first, flow second.
Fast forward to June this year. I had Jody doing live tuning when I purchased my DP tuner. He said I'd peg the filter minder without getting more air to the turbo. Well we didn't.....during the live tuning. But I did after departing for home and many times in the following weeks. I started seeing more black smoke (unintentional) and felt a SOPT lack of power.
I knew it wasn't getting enough air to the engine so I swallowed hard, cut a hole in the side of my AIS and installed the fender sleeve. I also did a modified ZooDad mod. WOW! Instantly I noticed the truck moved quicker off the line, no more smoke and my filter minder hasn't moved since, even after flooring the truck in 120 HP tune. I'm very happy with this result. I know my truck is getting the cleanest air possible and she moves like a race car, but pulls like a tractor. On a recent deer hunting trip towing my 31' TT I used DP's 40 HP tow mode. I saved almost 1/2 tank of diesel on the same trip I've made numerous times. Oh, and the truck never once downshifted from overdrive to third. What a pleasure to tow with!
I was thinking the same thing. The main reason the stock setup tottally sucked was those clamps never seem to make a snug airtight connection all the way around the box.
Not if you compare it to an early 99 that drew air only through the wheel well. That was a real crappy design. Fortunately I never ran a K&N drop in. The wheel in my old turbo with 98k still looked good.
Robin's picture is what it looks like in a late '99 thru 03 model. Nice, straight forward install. About a 2 beer job. You have to remember also that the filter element is HUGE compared to the stock unit.
