Question for those that have put headers on their 5.4. How did you get the nuts off of the old manifolds? Mine are so rusted there round, and most of them you cant get a pair of vice grips on them. I could torch them off but I was trying to make that my last resort. Any help would be appreciated.
I didn't do mine, but there are some options. If they are nuts, then they are on studs which can be removed. You will probably have to remove them anyway to use new bolts. So you can try a stud extractor or just your vicegrips on the studs. You could also try a nut splitter or a chisel. In any case, letting penetrating oil soak in over night and then running the motor a few minutes to get the manifolds warm to the touch will all help.
I planned on that, I dont wanna be messing around re-torqing header bolts every couple weeks.
Actually, that only needs to be done for the first few weeks or a month or two.
For the headers on my V10, I re-torqued the bolts every few days and it only took a month or two before they tightened up and stopped coming loose.
The reason is, the gasket crushes.
If you DO NOT re-torque the header bolts you WILL have gasket leaks.
So, don't just set-em-and-forget-em. Even with locking header bolts, you SHOULD re-torque until they stop loosening up. It's not the bolts backing out, it's the gasket crushing over time.
