If you pivot the drive shaft pieces to work the u-joint, it should move easily and smoothly in all directions. If it feels tight or rough, take it apart and find out what is wrong with it.

I have had many u-joints fail because of the "grooving" problem.

is it bad if i cant turn my driveshaft by hand? i know i either got a locker or a spool (never been inside but both tires pull) and i dont have a jack big enough to raise the truck. lol. and the u joint i replaced was broken. the inner bearing surface on one end had actually broken off and seprated.

Go to Edelbrock's webste. You'll find instructions on how to tune and troubleshoot carbs.

Something about all this sounds like the "death shakes" to me.
What do you guys think?
Am I on the wrong track?

Seems like they'd start when you let off the gas at ~45mph and could be
"cleared up" (early on) if you'd stand on it and speed up. Later as the wear
in the front gets worse the "gassing it" doesn't do anything but make the
shaking worse to the point where "Billy's words" are running through your
head and/or being screamed at you from the passenger seat. :)

"we're all gonna die :/" -Billy in Predator

To fix the death shakes is easy as pie, just not cheap is all. :)
Go through and re-new all the joints in the front end like you mean business.
Easy as that.

"all I can tell you is... something is loose in the front end" -Ford mechanic

That information worked for me! ;)
YMMV

ps- it's up to you to figure out if it's the front-end or not
pps- "I wouldn't wish [your problem] on a broke dick dog" might fit here too?

thanks for the encouraging words. lol but mine doesnt clear up with throttle and mine isnt shaking. its just a vibration you cant even feel it, you can just hear the windows rattling like crazy and the truck seems to bog down. but on an off subject note, i had a guy call this morning wanting to trade me a 68 mustang for it, so i may go that route.

stang was a no show. i did find a rather healthy vacuum leak coming from the carb to intake gasket, but other then that nothing new on the truck.

Now wierd enough my truck stutters or really hesitates when easing in on the throttle from idle. This is new and same time as the vibration. Accel Pump? I lookd down the carb throat and hit the gas, it does pump but how to know it it pumps enough?

just jacked your thread..but i might help us both.lol
Get a fuel pressure gauge and see what the pressure is at.

well i may have found my problem. i was bored and just laying under the truck trying to figure this out and noticed a shiney spot on the driveshaft. im thinkin a weight or something may have fallen off on my last trek through the woods. the truck was getting bounced around enough to break my tailgate hinge andkick out a body mount, so who knows. on a side note where is a good place to get the tailgate hardware/hinges for a stepside? whats on mine looks like a piece of plumbing elbow bolted to the bed with a piece of pipe out one side for the tailgate to pivot on.

Yeee Haaaw! :)

Nothing like layin under your truck when you're bored huh? :)

I spend way more time doing that than I've spent standing around looking
at the boring outside part.

There's several ways you can go from here to temporarily test your theory...
So are you gonna lay back under there and think about 'em? ;)

Get on ebay, they have tail gate parts on there with high quality at pretty good prices.

so update. I had a leak in the fuel pump and when i replaced it the truck gained alot of power. secondaries werent opening so my guess is the leak at the pump wasnt allowing enough fuel to reach the carb. I also have a a warped intake, creating a vacuum leak. and im going to have to recheck all the u joints because whatever was causeing a vibration is now causing a clunk as well. Im thinking i may have had a needle bearing from the u joint i replaced slip or something. also, please forgive my lack of knowledge on this part, the truck has a np205 and a 9" rearend. the driveshaft has 3 u-joints (i replaced the middle one) the first u joint bolts to the t case and is pressed into a smal lshaft about 3-4 inches long, and then another u joint and the actual driveshaft. so A.) what is this setup actually called. and B.) inbetween the 2 front u joints is a little ball with needle bearings inside that rides on a small shaft and there are 2 cup like things (one on either side) that the ball fits inbetween. what is this bearing called? i believe it may be my problem aswell, fore when i replaced the last u joint it came out and i had to reinstall the needles in it.

Set that thing up on blocks and start it up.
-->try not to get run over, because it'll hurt<--
And then decide if it's the drive shaft or not.
It's easy to decide once you're under there with it spinning at 45 mph.
It'll run smooth and pretty as anything you ever saw -if- it's straight
-and- balanced! :)

Check the straightness of your rear wheels while you're at it. ;)

Forget about fixing a drive shaft yourself -if- you want top-notch vibration
free performance.

Take it out and take it to a drive-shaft-shop and bring money with you. ;)

BTDT and it rules! :)

ps- I fix my own flats and balance my own tires, drive shafts ain't tires ;)
pps- mark the sucker and the yokes its attached to, with spray paint or
something so you and them will both know how it lined up before.
ppps- I used an automatic center punch so mine's marked permanent.
