Shezammmmmmmm, I didnt even know there were complicated reasons and stuff like that....

Electronic circuits (such as in CFLs and AC-DC transformers) are very complex when it comes to what the electrons are doing in the wires. GFI receptacles work by measuring the difference in current (with circuitry) between the hot and neutral wires. If the difference exceeds 5mA (a very small current), the GFI trips, by design--the theory being that the current flowing "in" on the hot wire should all flow "out" on the neutral, if it's not, it could be flowing through a person to another ground path.

The study of electricity/magnetism and quantum physics are very interrelated, and quantum physics is some pretty illogical stuff.

Here's another good one....neutrals are often smaller than the hots as loads tend to be balanced...there are now situations esp. in office towers where there is more current being sent out the neutral than the hots coming in due to harmonics....causing all kinds of fun things!!....looks pretty intersesting when 2000 amp wire burns up!!
