Everything goes bad. Take a test light and with the key on you should have power to the switch. NOw put the light on the other side of the switch. You should have no power till you push the button. If you have power after you push the button. then your problem is elsewhere.

I'm not sure if it's question of the amount of power they carry, or whether or not the new ones are cheap. And yes the older buttons were one wire with the 6V positive ground systems. When I rewired, I got a flow through switch that returns to the starter solenoid to avoid th egrounding to the dash problem. But I have it wired separately from the ignition circuits.
I'd be sure and check that ground to your dash as will. Might need a little cleaning up.
When they go bad, does the truck just not start? The problem I am having is the starter engages but it turns hard. I just put in a new starter with new headers because I thought the starter went bad because the header and that side had one of the tubes only a 1/4 inch at the most clearance. The new starter started dragging.
maybe the new starter needs shims ??????? i doubt the button is the problem there . did you turn it over without the switch on , in the off position ? should turn over real easy then if theres nothing wrong mechanically . as far as the elctrical well .......... i wont venture there my archille's heel it is .
The starter has been working ok. It even started right up this morning even thought it was cold. I stopped for gas just a few miles from home. When I went to start it, it acted like it was not going to start.
If the starter turns over, it is not your 'button'. Are you still 6 volt? (I will be staying with 6 on mine...) anyway, whether you are 6 or 12, check your grounds. To the block and frame.

Hi again Pappy,
The previous post was correct. The switches are simple contact switches and they either work or don't.
Let me ask again just for clarification: did you say that you only have 1/4 inch clearance between your headers and the starter?
If that's true then thats way way way too close and I would bet ya nex months paycheck that your starter is absorbing some high heat (especially after driving and sitting for a few minutes.) That will bind it up and make it drag. Eventually it will kill it.
Next time you drive your truck, it gets all warmed up, then it sits for about 2 minutes, reach down and put your hand on the starter. If it's too hot to hold, that's probably the problem.
