I have an 82 XLT Lariat with a 302 Automatic with an electrical engine problem. Seems the battery won't charge. I have a new battery, regulator and alternator. The belts are all good. I can charge the battery manually but will eventually drain completely when running the truck. I also experience twice a puff of smoke under the passenger front side of the hood where the battery and regulator are located. Once when I started the truck and once when the battery was completely discharged. I don't know where the puff of smoke is coming from and nothing appears burnt or scorched when I look.
Has anyone experienced this problem? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.<O</O
How old are your battery cables, and what shape are your terminals in? did you replace all three components at the same time or one at a time? if one component fails it can take out the others then you run in this circle of replacing one component witch gets killed by the component it just killed so you should drive up to your local autozone and have the charging system tested while in the truck.
I took you advice and had the charging system checked. Seems I blew the Alternator. Going to replace it (Again) and hopfully won't blow anything else. I'm hoping there isn't a short somewhere causing the problem. Thanks for the quick reply. Have a great day.
Aciano has a good tip in checking the integrity of the battery cables. They can corrode from the inside out. (the voice of experience) You can meter them and get 12 VDC but if they can't handle the amperage due to deterioration and increased resistance they will actually draw down the entire electrical system until/unless they are replaced.
