COUPLE OF THINGS....
1)I am puzzled by the statement that tire(s "can not be balanced". Are we talking about just ONE tire here ? ) I suppose it is possible thru some kind of gross manufacturing defect and/or horrendeous road hazzard that could be the case ? ) OR are we talking about all of the tires on an Excursion (or any other modern automotive-style pneumatic tire....?)

Modern manufacturing standards and pre-shipping tests make me REALLY puzzled as to how a tire got shipped from a factory, then balanced and installed on a vehicle "that could not be balanced"....? ? ? ?

Would be very interested in knowing more about this. (my own balancing equipment has the CORRECT adapters for just about every size wheel - have yet to have had to add more than 3 ozs. to any modern car or light truck tire.

As a side note, many tire shops still have "tire-knives". These machines are "left overs" from the days of bias tires - some of which have to be "trimmed" to make round - i recall once we had to shave close to 5/32nds off some then-new bias-ply tires to get them to where they could be used. ( of course we could have BALANCED them, but being out-of-round they would still have provided an un-acceptable vibration...) ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

2) I want to apologize to "Poster 1" above for making fun of his...well...you know. What I dont understand is why he keeps adding on my comment about his...well....you know....to ALL of his recent "posts" ? Is he asking for sympathy ? If so, we should certainly be gentlemen and extend it.... ( You never know WHAT physical deformity and/or mental disability these guys who let their diesel engines run, when they stop at a fast food joint, are trying to compensate for.. with all that noise they want their vehicles to make.... ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? )

I ran GY's for years until I began throwing tread to the belts. I also had them on my new Corvette, noise so loud could not hear the radio and wore out early. Michelins work well for me on my cars. On my truck I am using the Cooper truck tires. I have been driving a set for 3 years and 30,000 miles and can't see any wear. Smooth quiet also. However I am concerned about the tires aging out before wearing out which is why I bought the coopers over the Michelin. I only drive the truck about 10,000 miles / year the the michelins would age out. It looks like the coopers will also age out. But for a daily driver Michelins for me. GY's are out IMO.

I'm the person who started this post and offer the following information. All four tires failed the "load" balance test at a Ford Dealership. The DOT manufacture date on the tires is 4507. Every set of Goodyear tires I have had on my F250 and now on my recently purchased Excursion have had a indentation in the side wall of the tire. This tends to make me believe the side wall of the tire is changing which could be the cause of the problem. I'm not a tire expert but at 800.00 to 1,000.00 per set I would like better quality.

Tiffany,

Thank you for the link. I guess I had better rethink my tire strategy. I will have to see how old my present tires are if it stops snowing this afternoon.

Thank you,

Forgot the name on the tire side walls is "Goodyear Tracker 2".

Goodyear (like any company) has better and worse quality tires in their own line ups, to try and have a tire for each "cash category"

The trackers are a lower quality tire.

If you want a good quality goodyear the silent armours are one of the top for a/t.

Since ya dont want a goodyear, I would go for a higher quality michelin or a toyo personally. Ive seen michelins last for along time, and ive read and heard tons of good on toyo's. Ive had the bf a/t's and I didnt hate them either.

As for the actual age of the tires, what ive personally found (from working at a goodyear dealer) is the tire shelf life is good for about a year and a half to 2 years, to still get your maximum use of the tire (from any manufacturer). After that we have always cut our losses and sold the tire discounted, with a warning that they sat on the shelf for so and so long. Proper storage is needed to though.

Lots of people that throw lots of miles on vehicles in a short time would come in and ask for "old" tires, cause they were cheap, and they would eat up a set of tires in a few years anyways!

I hear ya on the Goodyears! I won't touch them! I only run Toyo MT's or AT's or BFG tires. Since running these tires I have never had a tire problem!

Tires

We run BFG's on everything, from G-Force Sports on my 61 VW to All Terrains on my 99 F-150 and 02 Ex and Baja T/A's and Mud Terrains on both of the BITD Series trucks I work on. Haven't had a single problem with any of them them

It kinda makes you wonder what our boy "Smilin' Bob" would do if he drove a PowerStroke? Okay, okay, I know but since the subject came up and we're talking about tires and things that inflate . . . . . .

Actually there is not much of a choice out there, I have heard of good results with Toyo tires.

The bad thing about it is it costs about 1000.00 for a good set of tires on an Excursion.

I for sure would not get some odd named tires that the tire dealer say's were made by........ or,,,,,,, just to save a few bucks.

Michelin makes a tire that is sold by Sears called a Michelin X/S, they wear well and balance just OK but the PROBLEM I have had with them is dry rot, I'm gong to replace mine because of this. All Mitchelin X/S tires from what I understand are sold by Sears only. I have these on my Excursion and do not reccomend them at all.
costco sells the same tire. they are a DIFFERENT carcus, than what an independant michelin dealer sells.

I understand that a tire stored under the vehicle exposed to the salt, weather, and the UV might be a problem after that length of time. I ask because I was planning on doing the same thing with the BFG Long Trail Radials on my Suburban prior to getting rid of it.

Thank you,

the rubber will "dry" out over time. and also, it being a pressure vessel for that many years is bad. i wouldnt run it, unless i HAD to.

being a GOODYEAR, its most likely separating(delaminating) this is VERY common for those tires. and most come apart, LONG before the tread is worn.....

he said it right...they call them GOODYEARS, b/c you only get ONE good year out of them....

All I can say is that I haven't put very many miles on mine but before I bought them (Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmors) I read a bunch of reviews on TireRack. They received good to very good reviews. I also read a lot of opinion on this site - again Michelin seem to come out on top and all the rest compete for second place.

I'm pretty confused by this part, are you reffering to me adding your comment to my signature? If so, I'm not adding it, the site does so automatically as that is now my signature. I thought it was so funny I tossed it in there. Oh and I have a V10 and it never idles for no reason. Lastly, you were talking about your own parts, never driected that at anyone but yourself. We can find the thread again if you like?
