One of my friends has an amplifier that randomly pops, the radio will be at 0 volume and the subs just go nuts for a few seconds. Has anyone else had a similar problem or an idea of whats causing it? I have replaced all of the wiring, and added a capacitor, the only time it doesnt have this problem is when the right rca plug is disconnected.
If disconnecting the RCAs stops the noise, then it's probably ahead of the amp. To test to be sure, take an RCA cable and cut it up, wire the shielding to the center conductor. With this plugged in, if the amp doesn't act up, then the amp is fine.
Do you have a DMM? Try measuring the resistance between the chassis of the amp and the outer edge of the RCA connectors. I can't remember the type that should have a resistance, but if you have two different values, that or a ground loop will be your problem.
Ok the popping problem is solved, But the solution was to take a 6" rca cable and connect the left output (from the amp, not the radio) to the right input, it works as it should but it only pops when the right channel from the radio is connected.
So the amp is fine then. sounds like either the RCAs or headunit's output are bad. If you want to test further, you can swap right and left on the headunit. However since you have it figured out and working, just put a splitter on the left channel so it inputs both channels on the Amp.
