I have a noisy front wheel bearing in my 93 f250 4x4. I just replaced the ball joints, and I guess that i did a ****ty job of repacking the bearings.. ( was in a rush) should I replace them or can I just repack them??
could make sure they are not loose, people i bought my truck from said they put new wheel bearings in my truck, which they did but they didnt tighten the center nut, only was noisy in 2wd without lockouts enguaged
You might be able to just repack em but you will have to completely clean them and the raceways first to inspect them first, any chip's or scoring in the plating and they're done for.
In a case like yours, bearings condition are in question, you could just put in new bearings, don't forget the races, and be done with it.
Yea bearing and seals are really not that expensive, however I do not replace them every time I have them out for one reason or another, if they are "good" there's no reason to.
I would not suggest ever replacing bearings without replacing races, if one is bad so is the other and bad races will just kill your new bearings.
The question of wether or not to replace or repack depends entirely on how they look when you take it apart, but replacing is the safe route. As deeznuts822 said they may just be loose, but that will damage them also. Take a real good look at the spindle to make sure the bearing wasn't turning on the spindle. If you find damage make sure you get all the old grease out so no peices get left in there. It's also not a good idea to mix greases so either use the same grease or get all the old stuff out. Slap pack the new bearings, if you've never seen this, it's where you slap the bearing unto a glob of grease in your palm, ask if ya wan't clarification, and you almost can't use to much grease full the inside dish of the hub with it before you put it together.
