Hello all. Well my last post went well and I finally have my E40D rebuilt in my 1990 F-250 460ci. So anyway Im filling it up with tranny fluid and i go in to start the truck to fill the torque converter. It fires right up to my surprise (thought Id have at least one problem). I turn it off go and top of my fluid and jump back in the truck. Try to start it and it idled ruff then shut off. Then all it would do was crank over and not fire. Pulled a spark plug and turned it over to see if I had spark. No spark. Before I start dismantling this thing again! Any advise? Oh and is there always an extra plug by the transfer case? I noticed the O2 sensor wasn't plugged in but it seems to be a bit of a stretch. Probably should of checked more into this truck before I bought it but ran fairly decent. I havent replaced any of the little things like plugs wires cap or rotor but they dont really seem that bad. Chilton doesn't say #$^& and I hate that book. Any advise would be great. Thanks Ed
I know on the 351, 302, and 300 that it was on the dizzy until ~92 model year and then it was on the fender. Not sure on the 460, but only replace it with FoMoCo or motorcraft replacements unless you enjoy replacing parts.
Thanks for the fast reply, I did the small things first, truck fired right up. But now it likes to die in drive or reverse get a battery light when idle and engine light ( 02 sensor not connected?). Batterys new. But both go off with a little gas. Heres my big problem now. The 4 wheel drive when engaged bangs horrible up front. made sure it wasn't the transfer case so I unlocked the hubs and put it in 4 no noise. So I am assuming something up front. Any suggestions?
Oh and I'm sorry never heard the term "dizzy" were exactly is that?
dizzy is short for distributor
Your problems with engine light and killing it in gear sound like a low idle. Don't adjust the screw on the linkage. The idle is controlled by the IAC (idle air control). This is on the throttle body.
You can try taking it off and cleaning it well. Sometimes they have to be replaced.
Check the timing, but be sure and pull the spout connection while doing it, and replace it when done.
Front end banging kind of sounds like a bad or damaged lock out.
Good Luck Frank
