Lloyd, I have used Melling spring in the past, on a brand X BB, that I tried a Melling Cam in , It was a low lift .515"/.515" 308* Duration Hyd cam...and they seemed to work just fine up to about 6200rpm...

But this was some years ago, and I know Metallurgy has changed in leaps and bounds for springs these days...As for the new Melling springs ..I wouldnt have a clue ! But that motor was in an A/ED and it didnt have much of a load on the motor..As it weighed 2200lbs w/driver...

Why I asked is that when I rummaged around in the other shop, I found 16 brand new in the box VS-280 springs. My applications are for race only, and these were originally for a hydraulic cam 390 engine. If someone needs them for a new build, I will give them the new springs. I don't want to give them to someone who is going to sell them. It seems that many on this website are working on a tight budget, so free is a good price. I don't know of anyone building a FE locally, at this time.

Thanks guys for the nice words. I have had these springs for I don't know how long, sitting on a shelf. I know I will not use them, and I do not need the hassle to sell them, so I thought that some one who was into a stock build, it would save them a little money. I think my two new sets of valve springs for our cj and scj 428 engines was around $300 so stock springs must be around $100-$130 a set. Using used springs in a stock re-build, is ok if you check each spring height/pressure, and adjust with shims, but new springs are a better way to go. I remember when I was younger and money was tight, $100 was a lot of money. In fact, back in 1969 I remember saving up to buy a $50 carburetor.
So if I can help someone now, then great.
One thing that I wish is that I knew a local young kid who had the passion to race cars as we did when we were young. Then I would help him build a killer FE engine and watch him race. Today the young kids are into video games and care less about cars. We never had children, and my dog Luke does not know how to drive. LOL...

Lloyd....I'am up for adoption !!!! But your not old enough to be my Dad, as if he were living still he'd be 77....But ya know thats one thing that Him and I never really got to do together..was build our own Race car !! That would have been so cool !!

But I helped him with his Roadsters and T-buckets, and taking out firewalls in some of his old Drag trucks to set the motor back, He was a crack Machinist and a tool and Die maker by trade..

But with the last ride we were going to do together.. Before I moved down south.. He had a front and rear halfed 65 Comet 2 dr. car, Buckets and console...Jet black with the pony dove interior.. LOL..we used to get alot of interior work done in TJ..and we would build the motor and drivetrain...and Dads Buddy at work, that did custom painting for George Wing (Wing Aircraft) use to do all his paint work.. and in return we would build motors for him (his parts) LOL..

But I left that car with him in 93 when we moved back here...and the following year he got Cancer !! and the Car sat under his carport for years (Covered) My Mon wanted me to come and get it when he past away 5 years ago...and I couldnt do it!! That was supposed to be a Father and son build...and I did deserve it!! Because I hadnt taken time out of my life in 10 years at that time to go and see hin while he was alive!!

But the Family kept his Cancer from me...So I had noway of knowing? Sure we talked on the phone all the time! and joked , Just like we were in his shop or mine drinking beer and trying to Perfect the wheel !! LOL.... But I guess the family and he kept that from me , for my own protection!! Because I knew the doctor he was seeing for 25 years..and he always was given a clean bill of health !! But at 67 he was given the news that he had stage 4 cancer!!

well 5 years ago when I buried him in the Korean War Vets Cemetary in San diego,CA..over looking the La Jolla beach!! I made a personal trip to Brentwood to see his Doc...and this was on My terms!! I was Cocked, and locked and ready to Rock !! Well I didnt end up in Jail..or prison..altho it could have ended up that way very easly!

This Man was down on hand and knee....and his wife was the Sec. and they had there kids Pics in there office's....and I heard the words of My Dad in my Head...saying Son !! Its not going to bring me back..and I'am better than fine where I'am....I happy and peaceful...you just wouldnt understand ! So DONT be stupid...you havent done anything wrong YET!! and dont let it go there!

well i kinda came back to reality at that time....and felt a calm come over me that I had never felt before!! I turned and Look at Dr. ******** and said your a VERY lucky Man ! My Dad has forgiven you !! But i never will ..as you took from me the best friend and Son could ever of had or asked for!! BUT I will never forgive you!! And you Little SOB, you better keep looking over your shoulder everyday until you die...Because you might never know when "I" might have a change of heart!!

Sorry about the letter Guys !! as I didnt meen to write a book here! I guess its just been something Building up inside me?? I usually dont spill or Air My Laundry out in a forum!!

Well thanks for Listening....Now to take the wife out dancing to an Oldies but goodies band!!

Take Care all !!

Know the feeling Russ, but it was with is a real twist. Unlike your fond memories mine are less than favorable. Instead of my old man passing from cancer, my 16 year old sis came down with it (Amila Blastoma,[sp] bone consuming in her jaw) and when she personally called him begging him to assist with the hospital bill as we simply didnt have the $$ 9 years after he walked away from his child support responsibilities. His response is "If I had the money to give you, I'd repair my bumm knee" 4 years later we wnet to see the grandparents on his side as they were reaching that age and pleaded to see us before they went. His Mom calls him to come see who is here to see him.. F'k it took all I could muster niot to slit his god damn throat right in front of her, instead I wished him a life as ****ed as he'd spared us in return and made my piece with it all. But he'd be ill fated to cross my path in absence of retribution to this very day, cause if I thought I could get a way with it..

Looks like you both have had some very trying times. The best thing to try to do is take all that hurt and turn it to love for your loved ones. One thing that I have learned over all these years is that we only have power over ourselves. No matter how much we want for others to see our point of view, we have no power to change their hearts.
Now, we can only be the best we can be for those we love, and trying to be the best example we can for others.
Thank you for sharing these painful experiences. In a hospital in Southern California, my sister who was 28 years old was given the wrong blood after surgery, and she died. This was in 1973. Nothing I could say or do would bring her back. I now take more time visiting with family and friends and less time thinking about what I want. I see more, listen more, and try to understand people more. I look at the glass half full, and try to be more agreeable.

well Bobby , Lloyd, I know there are's alot of people out there that have relating stories. And I'am sorry for everyones lose...

I dont know what stuck a cord with me last night? I guess it must have been Lloyd saying her never had kids much less a Son to pass things onto...and I share that with him...

Even tho I have a great Daughter out there in SoCal... She's just turned 32 this past July! and has given me a lovely Grandaughter ! But were not all that close..As after loosing my Son, back in 79 at birth....My whole world changed....

I never did turn to drugs (Thank God) but at one time at that young age I could take on the most seasoned Beer drinker! and drink them under the table!! But I was raised on beer too!! LOL.. Being out in the garage with Dad and his friends, Or my Uncles....Learning ,drinking and wrenching!! Oh and listening to Rock and Roll on the Juke Box!! LOL...

Still the same way I am today!! But with a little less beer !! instaed of a case a day on the weekends..Its now a 12ver ! LOL..

Well the dancing and the Party went well last night!! After moving 3 couch's and 3 love seats, 1 couch with a fold out bed in it!! and driving over 200 miles between all the house's... Laying new carpet in our living room... Getting up and going at 5am, Getting home from the party sometime after Midnight and hitting the rack at 1am... This 53 year old man is just about beat!!

But I have to take another Love seat over to my step Daughters house..this morning...and go pick-up my TV sound system cabinet, that goes in the guest bedroom..and finish that room this next week.. and then like I told the wife!! Even God didnt work on Sunday!! He went Drag Racing!!

Ya'll be good now!! I'am off and running...I'll catch up later!

To be 53 again with all that energy. Yes you are right, we would have loved to have children. I have a brother who told me years ago, we could have all of his. LOL.... At times I am sure they can be a heart ache, but other times they can fill your life. By some peoples standards my wife and I have lived a dull life because we have never drank alcohol, smoked or did drugs. Although I drink Coke, which is worse for you than beer, "in moderation".
My wife is into shopping, which is her favorite pastime. I enjoy flying, racing and seeing the country. We are both enjoying retirement, and I hope that all of you will get through this recession and enjoy your retirement when it comes.
Retirement is doing what you want to do and getting paid for it. Since retirement I have never had a day that was boring. Always something to do and look forward to. Life is good.
