I have the same Excursion as you do.
My original Alternator failed on a hunting trip at 37k miles, costing me over
$500 and a 1/2 day in Victorville, having it replaced by the dealer.
After about a year the Alternator installed by the dealer began
having issues, so I did some fairly serious researching and came up
with the solution as outlined with pictures in the thread linked above.
I could not be happier, the brand-new and much higher-quality
Alternator I went with has worked flawlessly, and installing it took less
than 20 minutes. An added bonus is that it cost about the same as another
marginal oem one would have.
Hope this helps!

Not to hijack the original poster's thread, but are alternators the same requirements for either a V10 or a diesel?
I, too, am in the market for a "better than OEM"
Thanks and drive safe,
Dan
I am using a high output from HO-Alternators. It's 230 amps and I've run it for the last 2 years without a hiccup. HO is distributing their alts through Tsunami/Metra, so every other stereo shop can order it.
Powermaster has been hit or miss for me, the 140's worked flawlessly but 200s had a lot of issues. About half of the 200 I sold came back with cooked bearings. They were always working on the problem, but the best answer they could give us was not to get them coated in anything.
Ford equipped all 7.3's and 6.0's with a "small case" 110 amp alternator, from 1999 on.
Or with dual 110's (ambulances, etc.)
Or so I am informed, my truck is a 2005, I custom ordered it new in 2004 and it definitely it came with that one.
I upgraded to 140 amps, as that is more than enough for my needs.
