Hi everyone. my truck is out of commission. needs new tranny, and has been sitting for a few months with ocasionly starting it and let it run. so its about 15 degrees here and i believe i have a short in my glow plug wires somewhere(darn mice!) i turn the key to on and volt meter drops instantly and lose radio and what not then about 10 to 15 seconds later it stops and the battery charger brings my electronics back. just wanted to confirm if it is was i think it is. thanks Chris
How long was the charger been doing it's magic? Completely dead batteries may not come back from the dead depending on the age and condition. These trucks need an awful lot of juice to power the GP's and fire the injectors.
its only been on for about 30 min now but i never tried turning it over. i just turned the key forward to see if things still worked, really for no reason at all, but it did that so now im here shortly ill will go out and check again
charger is good i got the batterys charged then put it on engine start when i turned the key to on so it wouldnt drain it right away and i got it started and in the garage where it is warm and easier to work on
You might have weak or dead batteries. Especially if it's been sitting in the cold.
I would agree with this. It sounds like your glow plugs are working properly. When the key is first turned on, the voltage required to run the GPR & glow plugs kills the rest of the electonics. When the glow plugs cycle off, everything else starts working again.
