Intermittent Problem Finally Solved!
I just wanted to put this out there for anyone having random cut-off problems with their trucks.
My boyfriend bought a 1987 F150 4.9 a few years ago for about 400 bucks. The catch was, it had an intermittent problem. It would drive fine for a while and then surge and stall before dying completely. At first, we thought it was the fuel pressure regulator, but everything was fine with that. So it sat in the driveway for about a year because we didn't want to shotgun parts at it. One day, he started it up and ran it just to keep it happy and it cut off; so he decided it was the perfect time to troubleshoot.
As it turned out, the contacts on the inertia switch connector were black with tarnish. Although the inertia switch contacts seem to be plated silver, the connector contacts were not; given, the unlike metals and twenty odd years of contact, they reacted.
The fix was super simple and inexpensive, we sacrificed one of his contact burnishers and the truck has been running like a top ever since. We've put about 250 miles on it so far and not even a hesitation!
If anyone needs the burnishers, you can get them at any electronic supply for a few bucks. It beats the heck out of hundreds of dollars of parts with no results that's for sure.
Here's what they look like:
