OK trivia experts. This is not a big pressing issue, but I do wonder (but am not losing sleep over it). Wife's Aerostar blew a tire saturday. We couldn't get a used tire to match the half-worn-out existing tires so bought a new one which makes the left rear have an effective radius (hub center to ground of 12.125" vs the right with an effective radius of 12." This obviously is insignificant with an open rear end (and likely also with a limited slip), but in running the numbers I calculate that driving straight like this is equivalent to continuously turning a right hand circle on a 483-foot radius. That makes it appear sigificant, but I think the differental will not have a problem with that over the long run, though probably the best course of action is to move that tire to the front. Now I suppose greater differences between left and right rear occur routinely because of sloppy tire pressure maintenance.
INLINE SIX POWER!
300 Cubic Inches of Low RPM Truck Torque! And twin-I-beams too!
At 60 mph, the rear tires are running at 840 rpm and 832 rpm, thus the differential gears are turning at 8 rpm. Or it might be 4 rpm, I can't think that hard right now. Either way I wouldn't worry about that myself. Or just put the new tire on the right rear, and burn the tread down til it's even with the left one. Oughtta be fun to try in an Aerostar.
I know with a locker it's hell. I blew a tire off the rim on the front and due to hub size differences I couldn't put my spare on the front, it would only fir on the rear. The spare was a 31, the BFG's I have were 33's. Going 45 mph the truck would start to pull to the right (side the spare was on) REALLY bad, then KERPOW! the locker would release and I would go straight again for a alittle while then the truck would start to pull to the right....
Should be able to get a good burn out on the 'ol Aerostar if I start on loose gravel. Have to wait until sometime the wife lets me take it out alone (or perhaps should have my son along for the fun of it). BTW, the tire shop said the size difference would not matter, but I just had to do the math, because it was there.
