5.4L Re-gear write-up

Just re-geared my Superduty in the last few weeks and figured I'd share my results with everyone. Its kinda lengthy put figured it might be useful to someone on here.

Specs:

Stock:

00 Superduty
5.4L Gasser
3.73 open diffs
265/75/16 Transforce AT's
183K miles
XA front springs

I use the truck for plowing snow and general farm use, pulling trailers, tractors, you name it. I do nothing but short 5-10 mile trips in it. The truck was pretty much a turd at everything. The rear springs sagged, I blew the trans after the first month I owned it. After that I decided I need to re-gear it and either lock up the diffs or get some limited slips. Plowing snow I really had to mash the gas to get it going and with the open diffs, traction was hard to come by.

Fast foward to this year and upgraded the following:

Jasper rebuilt trans
Dynomax bullet muffler w/turndown
Rough Country AAL in the back
Rancho 5000 shocks and steering stabilizer
4.56's gears
Eaton Posi rear
Yukon Powr-Lok front
255/85/16 Truxus MT's
SCT X3 Programmer

Finally got a few miles on the truck and a chance to plow snow now that I've got the gear swap done. The truck really gets off the line really well, but does wind out at 2500rpm at 60-65. A little high but for the short trips I do, it works well.

Plowing snow the truck is absolutely awesome now. It pushes snow like a diesel would. I no longer have to rod the truck hard to push piles, I can just creep up to a pile and let it just go right through. Plowed all day today without spinning a tire or having any traction, power, or steering issue. Both L/S units work very well and the front only has a little more steering effort to turn.

With the X3 programmer the truck shifts great and has some custom user options that work great for what I want to do with the truck.

Overall it was definitely worth the money and would recommend the same to anyone who uses thier truck like I do.

I'm going to call you "The Abominable Snow Man"... just kidding! Your truck looks great and I'm sure that you are enjoying the performance enhancements. Well done!

From 3.73's to 4.56's, that's a 22% increase in torque at the wheels. That's a BIG jump.

If I drove the truck for longer distances, or if it was my DD, I'd probably do 4.30's, but for my application 4.56's are about right.
