2 napa pumps and like 5 flushes....with the 4th flush in a temp one day fixed it back to normal then back to the noise the next day!
Ok,, the pump is a vane pump and my thoughts after 4 napa pumps are that you need a new pump. If the pump is rebuild and the sliding vanes have too much clearance in the rotor it is possible to make noise. Given you use the correct fluid "mercon III" or better it can only be the pump.
Bakerbuilttracks; Have You changed your belt lately? I changed my built one day because the original was getting bad. I paid the extrafor the gator back belt with the ribs and I got a viberation and a grinding noise in it. Seamed like it got worse the more I would drive it. Changed pump and did not work. Bought a plain ole cheap belt and that solved the problem.
JRF250 im gonna change mine with my spare 2morrow to see if that is the problem I suggest bakebuiolttracks does the same...check ur blet, belt tensoner idler pully i have had a 12 pack and im finding more info on the problem we have the further I get into the next pack!!!
change the belt...the tensioner still has a ton of tension
so i went ahead and changed the hydro booster along with the hydro-to-gear pressure house because the end was a little to rusty for my liking. I took off ALL the lines and blew them out and all were good.
Flushed yet again...with no luck on my noisy pump. So i called around and napa says they can get a NEW pump but its pricey...wat about a reman from ford...since there a lil larger then the average auto parts store anyone think it'll be remaned to working properly?
Also, i did find some small metal shaving in the flush this time. Ive talked to every parts store around here and they say cant order a P/S filter...wth gives?

Here's a one page, one pic PS fluid filter install. LINK

But the I was wrong once before in 1946.!
Still of the same opinion! but then it is only worth about $.02
I did a PS pump replacement last month, used a reman pump and had a yellow tag that said " P/S will make noise first 500 miles, this is normal" I have'nt hit 500 miles yet so Im gonna wait and see if it quit's down after the 500 miles.

Did the tag also say, "Warranteed for three days or five hundred miles, whichever comes first"?
It better be a good pump for what I paid, but I too am sceptical, so already purchased another pump to replace it with before its too late to return. Im hopefull because I hate doing the job twice, but get discouraged when I get crummy parts from the auto parts store.

Due to being a vaned pump it is possible to make noise. To do a comparisom listen to a new truck with new Ford pump and see if it makes the same noise. If it does then ok. If it doesn't you have to ask the question, "why are they different".
The vanes are very critical fits into the rotary slots. The flat part of the blade that seals with the outer housing must have a perfect fit. IF these parts don't fit properly you will still have pressure for steering but you will have noise. The fluid is critical, IT MUST MEET THE FORD SPEC. This is now normal powersteering fluid. If you have the right fluid and it is making noise there is a 'fit' issue inside the pump. It might wear in and seat but consider why doesn't a new one make the same noise? Does a new one have to wear in to seat and quiet down.
I am not trying to discourage you or say don't go the full 500 miles. But I would make sure you have the correct fluid, keep all proof of purchase and if you have to pull the pump I would want full $$ replacement and a NEW pump to install.
Hope it does wear in as changing them are about as much fun as hitting your thumb with a hammer.
I always go for NEW parts vs rebuilt due to having had these issues before. I just got tired of pulling "warranty for life" parts due to poor rebuild. This is not to take away from those who really do a good remanufacture. But there really is no way for the customer to tell which rebuild is good and which is bad. Best of luck.
So my question is MERC V or P/S fluid? (on the reman)
I used the Mercon III in mine 3 months ago when I flushed the system. But then it was leftover and I had the fluid. Given Merc V replaced the Merc III I would use the V.
PS fluid is so generic unless it specifically stated meeting the ford specifications I would not use it. Confirm for your truck in the owners manal the specification for the fluid.
The reason I had to flush mine was the shop that installed the new transmission drained the ps pump and refilled with PS fluid. Mine had a jerky feel in the brake pedal and steering until I changed the fluid. I thought my pump was failing but after replacing the fluid it returned to normal.
You can flush your system by removing the return line from the brake booster and routing it to an external container. Then with the engine running and a helper add new fluid to the pump while the helper turns the steering wheel small amounts left and right and pumping slowly the brakes. This will help the fluid flow through the system. It takes about 3 qts to flush the old fluid.
If you haven't done the flush I would do this before changing a pump.
OK so I have been hearing a slight groaning noise. Starting to get louder. Thinking it was the possibly the tach? I took my cheapo stethoscope and couldnt isolate it. I also went out to the booster but couldnt hear anything there nor Power steering pump. But today when I was re-starting after coming out of the Post Office when I applied pressure to the brake foot pedal it made a gurgle-ing type groan and settled in about a 1/4 inch lower??? So I am thinking booster? Whatya think?
