1966 Camper Special

Hi to all...First time on the site..Great Site..!!

I have a '66 F-250 CS and want to add the creature comforts of PB, PS and an auto tranny.
I have been reading the very informative threads on a good donor truck year..

I have read that the 67-72 parts will pretty much swap out..Then I read that 73-76 is the right way to go..
Can someone point me in the right direction as to what year series would best suit my needs for a donor truck..

Thanks for the tips..!!

Pretty much any of those years will work. It's easier to find later models, up to '79, and they will have disc brakes standard I believe.
If I had to choose, a '78 - '79 donor would be the ticket....get the whole truck if you can.

I will need the tranny tunnel cover and crossmember for an automatic, as I have the 352 and T-18. I will also need the PB booster.

Will these items bolt up on the 66 without major mods?

Sorry...Let me finish the above statement with..

Will the parts from a 78-79 fit without major mods?

I currently have a line on a complete, 72, 73, and 76 CS that are very reasonable price wise..

I have a factory auto coulumn and pedal setup...The automatics and 3 speed manual trans trucks didnt have a trans cover like 4 speeds...
The way Ford did it was to stamp a generic floorpan adaptable for all transmissions...the trans hump area had a recessed groove all the way around it which is where the 4 speed trans cover sits when the 3 speed/auto center section was punched out...I swapped a 3 speed truck to 4 speed...the floor steel is VERY thick...
Also, the floor mats are different too between the 3 speed/auto trucks vs the 4 speeds due to the increased tunnel height to accomodate the 4 speed tunnel.

Inquire if interested in the column and/or pedal setup...

The column is out of a manual steering truck...the original 66 p/s box is a MONSTER...and thus its column is unique to it and nowadays a tough find for the purist as its shorter then the manual trans columns...As for the steering effort...if the tires are inflated properly and all of the steering parts up to snuff the truck should steer easily. The exception is parallel parking...but the trick to that is simply dont crank the wheel unless the truck is moving.

Yes.

As stated you will have to do some jacking around with the floor since the auto floors were never cut out, and yours is. There is no "auto" cover that I am aware.

The PS column is shorter, because the gear is longer. You can shorten one or find one out of your donor.

If you use a C6, it's likely you'll have to customise the length of a drive shaft. You might be lucky and one of the donors fit...not my luck.

Some say you need the drivers engine perch from a PS equipped donor truck to clear the PS gear. I was able to grind a little of the gear box and it fit...tight, but it fit. If one of you donors has it, then swap it and your done.

The power brake booster, M/C will bolt up, but if you retain your pedals you'll have to shorten the length of the push rod and come up with a brake light switch setup.

All the above is very straight forward. The most difficult for me was shortening my original steering column. The rest was pretty simple and way worth the effort.
